We begin our study of Capital, vol. 1 by discussing what it means to read, study, and apply the book as comrades in the struggle for socialism in the U.S. today. We situate our reading within the struggle to not only popularize and give definition to socialism, but to establish Marxism as the guiding theory of struggles. Next, we cover some of the history and context of the book and finally examine the Prefaces and Afterwards by Marx and Engels, we introduce the form, content, methodology, and context of Capital, vol. 1, paying particular attention to Marx’s method of abstraction.

#1: REVOLUTIONARY READING (Prefaces & Afterwards)

Focusing on chapter 10, our sixth episode locates class struggle as the motor of capitalism and as that which determines the rate of exploitation and the value of labor power. By examining how the “normal working day” is established--in theory and in historical practice--Marx emphasizes how the command over time is central to the class struggle. We spend some time on his theorization of the state in this chapter, which takes on the dual function of managing inter- and intra-class conflict, which introduces the contradiction between individual and collective capitalists and the role of reform in the class struggle. We also broach the fundamental role that slavery and colonialism played in the development of capitalism, and how the latter transformed the former.

#6: CLASS STRUGGLE (Ch. 10)

Robbie Martin discusses the long memory-holed 2001 anthrax attacks on the 20th anniversary of the first murder, the death of American Media Inc employee Robert Stevens in Boca Raton, Florida (which took place on October 5th, 2001). 4 more would eventually die from inhalation anthrax after envelopes were sent through the US postal service containing  terroristic letters attempting to appear Islamic ( 'ALLAH IS GREAT' ) & high-grade weaponized anthrax spores. But what happened with all of those 'hoax' letters that contained fake anthrax? Who were those sent to? Were all these hoax attacks unrelated to the actual murders? Maybe not, as  'hoax' letters were sent from St. Petersburg Florida with eerie and confusing similarities to the real anthrax letters sent by the named anthrax killer. Listen closely as Robbie breaks down the timeline of why these 'hoax' letters and their implications could potentially turn the entire FBI Amerithrax case against Bruce Ivins upside-down.

How the U.S.’s Taiwan Policy Makes War with China a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
