Over the past few years, somewhat mysteriously, Volster has graduallybecome one of the most noted fresh figures of the Croatian electronic scene, leaving his signature through production, DJing, event organisation and, since recently, launching his own vinyl label, Out of Place.
The main subculture Marko was positively exposed to in the 90’s was techno, a style he has been practicing for almost two decades now. As he was performing within and outside the Croatian borders, Volster gradually started experimenting with his sound in the production process that led to signing his early releases with a few smaller foreign record labels. Frequent travelling around Europe and absorbing the music of foreign performers, such as Sandwell District, Mike Parker and Sleeparchive, significantly affected him and his relationship with the similar sound grew even stronger.
After launching Out of Place label, the only logical move was to start publishing his music, making his Nihilist EP label’s first release. What characterises Nihilist EP are harsh and cosmic tangles that vary from hypnotic techno to Detroit inspired electro, which guaranteed noted feedback from a few well-known artists. In addition, this release earned him the biggest recognition for the electronic music in Croatia, by winning the Klubska Scena award for Ambassador of the Year in the Vinyl of the Year category.
Parallel to the new musical chapter of his life, Volster launched TRAUM and Hipertenzija events in his hometown, bringing a new style of techno and club life, characteristic for the majority of Europe, to the local audience. Francois X, Amotik, DJ Deep, Antigone, Etapp Kyle, Paula Temple and Cassegrain are some of the few names that TRAUM hosted so far.
2018 saw a radical turn in his vision as establishing himself as an artist by launching his self-managed imprint, Secession. The first record entitled “The Process of Becoming” was released in December of 2018 featuring remixes from Swedish master of contemporary techno Anthony Linell and talented Berlin based duo Cassegrain. Second release is set for winter 2020.
To this day Volster has performed across the Europe ranging from clubs in Berlin and Budapest to festivals like Dimensions Festival and Modem Festival with his most notable appearance and debut performance in infamous club Berghain - Panorama Bar on September 2019.

This mix has been made with a “collage” type of work in mind, using small bits from a lot of different tracks to make an entirely new one. This is already something I have been experimenting with when I DJ but I wanted to take things a bit further with a more precise and surgical approach which a studio mix allows for. To achieve that, I've reworked and edited 99% of the songs I used, it took ages but was a very interesting and rewarding process that basically enabled me to make whole new edits of my all time favorite tracks.

Ascion is the musical project of Pasquale Ascione, an Italian from Naples, currently based in Berlin. What makes Ascion’s music to stand out from the contemporary techno context, is its immediacy and intensity delivered in a genuine and open-hearted manner. Pasquale maintains the subtle tension in his tracks. There are constant upsurges of energy and unrest in these acidic formations calming down just to reappear with even stronger punch. The tracks sometimes build up to the intensity of hardcore or echoes the golden age of rave as well as contemporaneous monolith Berlin tech-vibes.

Even though the majority of its output bursts with utmost vigor of the heated-up climaxes of warehouse raves, these is also a place for the moments of icy lushness manifested on the darker sci-fi’ish release “The Cybernetic Drama”, more downtempo of “Public Head” EP both released on his 3TH Records or profound and drifting tunes of “Channel #9” released on Deep Sound Channel. Pasquale’s various musical guises are nicely manifested in his sole full-length “Joy Dexon Club” on his Repitch Recordings, where airy and vivid techno compositions are infused with electrified pulses and traces classic IDM nostalgia hinting at legendary Warp output of the 90’s. Despite these references, Ascion’s tracks are best described neither by retro of futurist discourses, but rather a sprawling and overwhelming moment of the now, this hypnotic physicality still experienced in underground raves. Pasquale nicely sums it all up in the interview for Self-Titled magazine: “My music is characterized by a certain energetic atmosphere and distortion, regardless the genre. I like Power for the right mind-body-journey”.

His curatorial activity as label manager, visual artist and creative behind Repitch Recordings, 3TH Records and Cosmo Rhythmatic showcases the vast musical taste of Pasquale and in a way reflects his own sonic endeavours. Whether alone or together with his colleagues (D. Carbone and Shapednoise), Pasquale’s adventurous approach and true underground attitude are treasures in the scene.

XONO Invites - Optics 

For the eleventh edition of my Invite series I had the pleasure of inviting Dutch native “Optics” real name Abel Kneulman onto the show. 

21 year old "Optics" sound is one of pure dub and groove. Based in Amsterdam he has had an already impressive release schedule with releases on labels such as Warok, Format and Dynamic reflections to name a few. His latest release really set a mark for this talented young producers career, gaining support from some of the best around. With another release planned and a split EP with Yant on our own Platform 22 label Optics is one artist who is truly dedicated to the sound and the scene. 


In our interview, I asked Optics a few questions on where his journey begun and what steps he had to take to get to where he is now. We also cover a lot of his studio set up and his own personal tips on making it work.
