Rene Wise has only been in the game a short time though his network and output hint differently. A drummer from the age of seven, his intuitive ear naturally turned digital and has been catching the attention of industry heads in recent years. The Lady Machine is back for another round of Podcast fun for Bassiani Podcast 266. Born in Rio, based in Berlin, Camila Milieme developed an ear for techno at a young age, attending Brazil’s Galaktika parties and picking up tracks from radio show Novas Tendencias before landing her first gig at the fresh age of 21, and at the famed Bunker 94 in São Paulo no less. Following studies in music production in the UK, she eventually landed in Berlin and channeled everything into a dual career as DJ/producer. Her vinyl sets were, are, contagious and brimming with rapid-fire basslines, relying heavily on the type of techno à la Detroit that has been so foundational to the genre without aging a day. These ones she’s published on Mote Evolver, half of Unterwegs with musicmate Decka and resident at free-spirited Berlin party series Pornceptual. A successful crowd-DJ alliance is no easy task, but twenty years of experience have sharpened her instinct for sound and the people she’s playing it to. Driving techno that lurches along on a razor edge, slamming rhythms that vibrate through the body, the magical and unquantifiable substance that allows the very best raves to coalesce. Whatever it is she has it in spades and this latest instalment proves it. This recent number’s a cut from her live set at Bassiani in mid April; rampant grooves and low-end layers picked, welded together and distorted by this singular Brazilian talent, and mastered by @neptunemastering. The Lady Machine’s chopped-up beats are a techno purist’s dream, this newest arrival makes it reality.

I am looking for the bright blending beams of the space ship ICARUS to pick me up from White Ocean for a ride into the deep playa. I can see it arriving super dangerous and gently at the same time, a gigantic monster hovering over the cold sand. All of its machines are fully tanked and the crew is ready for take off towards a trip into the endless eternal darkness of the desert night, only the captain knows where he wanted to take us...to a far far away shrine like pyramid made out of lights...The DJ sets starts out with a sound coulisse by Stephan Bodzin accompanied by the improvised electric violin that runs though futuristic fx chains. lt progresses to an epic Seth Schwarz Remix of Lukkif’s Mine Hender that calls out the missing nomads to enter the ship for the journey. Once the engines are rolling and the reactor is above working temperature we start moving and the stars around us become only white stripes that burst into space time accompanied by Rauschhaus'a Eskrima - in that state it takes us only further into space, moments of silence occur, sudden moments of uncertainty, broken oxygen pipes, hidden agents that tormented us and blind passengers that had to be dealt with (for them the deep playa also provides;)). We we super lucky to find clean oceans to Reste on the blue planet Atlas to refill our tanks after being hit by Apollo. We were lucky then and out of the Imax speakers Opus was rejoicing, but not too long because the water was intoxicated with X-pollination, it not only Seems Real, it becomes a new universe before beaming back to Antwerpen… the legendary tales of the Icarus Crew are yet to be told, so let yourself float away and find yourself a ship to cruise on while enjoying this musical bonbon before the chapter closes with a captain future like hymn by Emika.

Since the turn of the millennium, UK artist Alistair Wells has been putting out a tough and abrasive brand of experimental techno that cannot fail to arrest your attention. Always skewing existing ideas into his own new—often brutalist—ways of thinking, his output has seen him become an in demand live act and DJ who plays across three decks all over the world. He does so under the alias Perc, mostly on his own label Perc Trax, and at the same time he has also brought on a number of likeminded artists from Ansome to Manni Dee. His own catalogue boasts albums like Wicker & Steel and The Power And The Glory, and these have rightfully won him deserved time in the limelight. That fact proves that although Wells has been around for years, he is as vital now as ever. 

As such he brings something new to our mix series across an hour of lively selections. Very quickly settling into a high tempo, high impact groove, there are maximalist techno cuts, passages of angst ridden noise and thumping bangers all bolted together into something uncompromisingly physical and in your face. Franky, it’s a vital visceral offering that would work at any point in the past, present or future of techno.
