This mix was recorded live in the Mojave Desert at a new campout called TRANCEPORT presented by Tri-Vision Events. The event featured “One-Stage-One-Vibe” of 48 hours of nonstop techno, psy-trance and trance. I was invited by my good DJ friend Michael Liu who was asking me on behalf of the promoter, Monique. The catch: I was invited to play a sunrise trance set! (For those of you who don't know, I started off playing trance in 1998-1999 but quickly transitioned into other genres). So I haven't played trance in 20+ years! But I decided it would be fun to hang with Michael Liu and get a little nostalgic over some trance music.

I collected some newer music for my sunrise set but mostly wanted to play some of the classic trance that I remember from back in the day. A lot of the nostalgic tracks are newer remixes that I hadn't heard before. Technically speaking, this is not one of my better sets as I haven’t played trance in so long and mixing trance is fairly different from mixing house (ex. It’s important to mix in key since trance is so melodic and it's also a lot of smooth, gradual mixing). There is one damn-near trainwreck during my set but I was able to correct it after about 15 seconds (strangely enough, I don’t remember it happening at the time)... anyway, I'll let you listen & find it yourself. ;) 

The mix starts at 138bpm which is the tempo that Thee-O was playing. I started off with some of the harder tech trance while it was still dark out. Eventually I slowed it down to 134bpm around sunrise but then sped it back up in preparation for Michael Liu who was slotted to play psy trance after me. I didn’t plan my set list but I did want to time the song "Young & Reckless" right at sunrise, which was 6:18am. After that I played some of the classics as the sun was rising in the desert. Finally, I played "Nothing Without You" (track 24) in honor of my friend BFunky who had recorded a mix called "Hearts To Remember" in February 2018 that was a very pretty mix of melodic and progressive house. BFunky had recorded that mix as an ode to all the loved ones that we've lost along the way. We lost Brandon last year so I thought it was fitting to play a song from that mix to honor their memory.

Aside from a light mastering, this live recording has not been altered or edited in any way. What you hear is what we all heard in the desert that morning.

Trance/Progressive House DJ and Producer Nicholas Bennison has a slew of productions which are played by the world's biggest DJs and have been licensed to major mix CDs by Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Christopher Lawrence, John 00 Fleming and Marco V, the latter four released through Ministry of Sound. Some of the industry's most influential labels that have released his work are Joof (UK), Five AM (UK), Recoverworld/Eve/Flux Delux (UK) and Fektive (Holland). Nicholas has collaborated with Christopher Lawrence, and was commissioned to remix Christopher & John 00 Fleming's co-production, Beyond The Limit, for the first release on Christopher's Pharmacy label. Nicholas has also co-produced tracks with Gareth Emery and legendary Hook & Bellboy Recordings producer, Chris Cowie (X-Cabs).

Nicholas's popularity as a DJ rose from the mid 90s as he played ferocious and technically brilliant sets for promoters such as Spundae, Giant, Insomniac, 1015, Belo, Myst, Empire Ballroom, La Boom, Clear Channel, Go Ventures, Destiny, B3 Cande, and Global Electro. In 1999, Nicholas was commissioned by Arcade America to mix two of the US's best selling Trance Global Nation CD compilations which collectively sold over 50,000 copies. To support the brand, Nicholas headlined the Trance Global Nation Tour (featuring Jerry Bonham, D:Fuse and Doran) and played televised events throughout North and South America, Canada and Asia. Nicholas's third mix CD, Crystal Vol.2, was released in 2001 as another testament to his unique and uncompromising style.

After years of success as a DJ, Nicholas diligently taught himself to produce his own music. His first single, Caverns, was signed to Looq Records and supported by Sasha, John Digweed and Nick Warren. This led to a stream of releases and remixes for the world's top labels and a successful career as a producer. 2008 saw the release of Nicholas's debut artist album on his Propulsion Records label. Tension of Opposites showcases his unique and evolving take on tech trance, progressive house, breakbeat, techno and psy-trance through eleven brand new productions. Since the inception of Propulsion Records in 2003, the label has had considerable success with an uncompromising sound that treads the line between progressive and trance but doesn't easily fit into either one of those categories. The roster is comprised of the most credible and influential artists from around the globe including Chris Cowie, John 00 Fleming, Christopher Lawrence, DJ Preach, Leon Bolier, Lee Haslam, DJ San, Inkfish, and Thomas Penton.
