Go back 30 years to see who had been reported to police for choking/strangling.  Or ask the public if they were ever confronted by such a person.  Probably a good chance that a female was attacked by someone she knew, in this way, but they never reported it, because 30 years ago domestic violence charges have less credence than they do now.
