In this episode, Between Love and Coercion: Sexuality in the Holocaust. A lecture by Dr. Anna Hájková from University of Warwick.

This hybrid event took place in UCD School of History on 6 October 2022 and was jointly organised by University College Dublin Centre for War Studies, Holocaust Education Ireland and the UCD History Seminar Series in Gender History.

This talk explores the intersection of queer and Holocaust history through the example of an enforced relationship between two women, a guard and a Jewish woman, in a concentration camp in winter 1945. This coerced relationship raises issues of sexual violence, sexual barter, and homophobia. Based on survivors’ testimonies, postwar trials, and reparation files, Anna Hájková will show how a queer history of the Holocaust allows us to address agency and powerlessness of Holocaust victims.

Anna Hájková - Between Love and Coercion: Sexuality in the Holocaust

Orla Hardiman is Professor of Neurology, Head of the Academic Unit of Neurology and Academic Director of Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, and Consultant Neurologist at Beaumont Hospital.

She is a science and medical graduate from UCD, and trained in Neurology in Boston. She is the Director of the National ALS Clinical at the National Neuroscience Centre, Beaumont Hospital Dublin Ireland, where she provides clinical are for over 80% of Irish patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) .

She is the author of over 280 peer reviewed publications and editor of a textbook of Neurodegeneration.   Her research interests include the epidemiology, phenotype, biomarker discovery and genetics of ALS. She is Co- Chair of the European Network for Cure of ALS (ENCALS) and is editor in chief of the journal Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Degenerations, and a founder of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland and the Irish Brain Council.   She is the recipient of a number of international honours and awards including the AAN Sheila Essey Award in ALS Research and the International ALS Alliance Forbes Norris Award.

The Origins with Walter Kolch and Frank Gannon

Dr Ray Power graduated from Medicine at UCD in 1988. After completing his specialist training in General Practice, he worked in Australia both with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the University of Western Australia where he completed an MBA and attained Fellowship from the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. 

A co-founder of Centric Health, Dr Power believes that the doctor-patient relationship is at the core of effective healthcare promoting patient health and wellbeing. He believes the impact of deep and meaningful relationships between patients and their GPs is about prevention and not hyper-intervention, it is moving from a sickness to a wellness model, it is about having the time to hear patients’ concerns and strive to keep them healthy in their own communities.

Dr Power is also an adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the UCD School of Medicine, enabling international academic partnerships.

Dr Ray Power - Co-founder of Centric Health

Dr Gary O’Toole studied Medicine at UCD, graduating in 1996, and completed his internship and basic surgical training in St Vincent’s University Hospital from 1996 – 1999.

His orthopaedic training was on the Irish Specialist Training Programme in Orthopaedic Surgery (1999-2004). He then completed two specialist fellowship training programmes. The first in adult hip and knee reconstruction in the Mater Hospital in Sydney, Australia; the second in orthopaedic oncology in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA. He has an interest in adult arthritis (both hip and knee) and knee sports injuries. He also has a keen interest in musculoskeletal cancer (bone and soft tissue tumours).

Gary is also a retired Irish Olympic swimmer – he represented Ireland in the Seoul and Barcelona Games. While studying at UCD, O'Toole won a 200m breaststroke silver medal at the 1989 European Long Course Championships in Bonn. He also won a gold medal at the World University Championships in 1991 when representing UCD. He helped to break 5 National relay records, including Short Course and Longcourse. 

As a prominent member of the Irish Amateur Swimming Association, O'Toole had been approached to make representations on behalf of the victims of the George Gibney scandal. Gibney, who coached O'Toole until he became aware of these allegations, criticised O'Toole publicly during the 1992 Olympics. His complaints were ignored and led to a major investigation into the incidents and ultimately to the disbandment of the IASA, and the creation of Swim Ireland.

Dr Gary O'Toole - Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr Dennis Slamon serves as Director of Clinical/Translational Research, and as Director of the Revlon/UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He is a Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and former Executive Vice Chair for Research for UCLA's Department of Medicine. 

Dr Slamon also serves as Director of the Medical Advisory Board for the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, a fund-raising organisation that promotes advances in colorectal cancer. 

He has won nearly two dozen national research awards honouring his scientific endeavours. He was the pioneering researcher who discovered the significance of HER2 alterations in the natural history of breast cancer. Dr Slamon’s work led to the development of the first specific anti-HER2 medicinal product for human use, trastuzumab (Herceptin).

A 1975 honours graduate of the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr Slamon earned his Ph.D. in cell biology that same year. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, becoming chief resident in 1978. One year later, he became a fellow in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UCLA, where he has remained and advanced through the academic ranks to his current leadership position.

Dr Slamon was in University College Dublin to receive the highest honour awarded by UCD - the Ulysses Medal.

Dr Dennis Slamon - Pioneering Oncologist and winner of the UCD Ulysses Medal

In this episode of the MUSAE podcast, Dr Aoife O'Gorman (UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science) talks to Angelo Cangelosi (Professor of Machine Learning and Robotics at the University of Manchester) and artist Maciej Chmara about creative solutions for our food systems with a particular focus on robotics.

Professor Cecily Kelleher graduated from UCD Medicine in 1980. Having completed a master’s degree in public health at UCD Professor Kelleher took up a post as senior scientist in clinical epidemiology at the Medical Research Council Epidemiology and Medical Care Unit in London, working on the large-scale Thrombosis Prevention Trial. 

She was appointed to the foundation chair of Health Promotion at NUI Galway in 1990. In 2002, she was appointed to the Chair of Public Health Medicine and Epidemiology at UCD and was head of the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science until 2015. 

In September 2015, she became College Principal, College of Health and Agricultural Sciences and is currently Dean of Public Health in the Faculty of Public Health Medicine. 

Professor Kelleher is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy. She served as Chair of the Covid-19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel for the report to the Minister for Health on the examination of measures to 2021. 

Her main areas of research are on lifecourse epidemiology and cardiovascular disease, childhood obesity, Traveller health, and the public health impacts of tobacco smoke.

Professor Cecily Kelleher - Dean of Public Health in the Faculty of Public Health Medicine (UCD Class of 1980)

Luke Casserly is a multidisciplinary performance maker from Longford, Ireland.

His work weaves together ecological research, autobiography, sound art, and site as a way of carving out space for new possibilities to emerge between live performance and physical landscape. His projects have brought audiences through city streets, back gardens, train stations, beaches, and a bog in the Irish Midlands. These have led to the creation of a network of wildflower meadows across Ireland (1000 Miniature Meadows, 2020–23), the planting of 1,000 indigenous trees (Root, 2021), and the development of an organic perfume made using botanicals from the Irish bog (Distillation, 2023). Often using autobiography as a starting point, his work attempts to open new conversations around humanity’s impact on the environment. He is interested in making work with a positive environmental legacy beyond the moment of live encounter with an audience, creating gentle, subversive interventions in response to the climate crisis while avoiding the anxiety, greenwashing, and didacticism that often surrounds the topic in contemporary society.
