Hey everyone, Dave Sully here, checking in from Cork with another Redzone session on Jungletrain – lots of new music 🌟

I kicked things off with Antagonist’s “Fables”, a perfect opener with its deep, atmospheric vibes. From there, things started to heat up with Modal’s “Heads or Tails” and some absolute fire from Loxy & Resound – those lads were on repeat this week with gems like “Rion-O”, “Magik”, and “Conflict”. Top drawer production....

The energy stayed rolling with standout tracks like Resound’s “Sapiens [SUBB014]” and Artilect’s “Surreal” – both delivering that deep, cinematic sound I love. And then there was Bungle’s “Plasticity”, absolutely hitting the sweet spot, alongside the timeless Seba with “Smoke” – a recent favourite of mine

Midway through, the set took a darker turn with Dom & Roland’s “Full Moon” and the weight of Homemade Weapons & Red Army’s “Ataxia (Red Army Remix)”. The flow was all about balance – smooth cuts like Jaise’s “One Little Bit” and Ahmad’s “Lesson 2 Learn” sat perfectly alongside the heavier hitters.

This mix features a selection of tough beats from the '92/'93 era. Most of the tracks evoke memories and influences from early rave mixtapes and pirate radio. Around 1992, a group of hardcore DJs and MCs from Wales, including DJ Buzz and Jason/Justin—whom we affectionately called the Wellies—came to Cork. We quickly became friends, and their records left a lasting impression on me. It took many years to track down my own copies, most of which are included in this mix. Play it loud!

Last night’s show was a deep dive into the darker, more atmospheric edges of Drum & Bass and Jungle, opening with the lush sonics of Loxy & Resound’s "Galaxies" and easing into the weighty pressure of Gremlinz & Jesta’s "Opium Den." From there, things took a sharper turn with fresh energy from Rozzer’s "Paradigm Shift" and the haunting precision of Cern’s "Second Thoughts." 🔊

This set was all about contrast—ethereal textures meeting militant drums—with standout moments like Quartz’s forward-leaning "Runtime" and the cinematic bleakness of Dreadmaul’s "Sands Of Time." There were flashes of old-school spirit too, with DJ Crystl’s "King of the Beats (Fierce Remix)" and Creative Wax’s Equinox re-touch of "Stay Calm" bringing that classic pressure into the now. ⚔️

Atmospheric Jungle Vinyl Mix

Hey everyone,

Here’s Part 2 of the vinyl mix series from last week's Jungletrain show. This time, I’ve taken things in a slightly different direction — expect a tougher, more aggressive edge to the beats and vibes. Think gritty, rolling breakbeats with a darker undercurrent.

I'll be honest — the mixing’s a bit rough around the edges (we're keeping it real here), but the energy and selection make up for it. It’s all vinyl again, centered around that golden 1994–1996 atmospheric jungle sound. Plenty of depth, space, and some proper mood in there.

A few rare gems pop up throughout, and everything was recorded through the SSL 2 MKII with the Legacy 4K analogue enhancement engaged — adding that extra bit of warmth and punch to the signal.

Jungle Vinyl Mix pt.2

Here’s the next mix from my recent Jungletrain shows.
For this one, I’ve been focusing on something I’ve overlooked for a long time—getting back into mixing vinyl. It’s been a really rewarding experience to leave the CDJs aside and return to the tactile joy of the decks. The weight of the 1210 platter, the feel of cueing up a record, flicking through stacks of wax, recognising labels without knowing track names—all those little nuances I had completely forgotten about in recent years while focusing mainly on digital mixing.

I guess I’m at a point in my journey where gigs have mostly dried up, and the few that do come along are rare. So I’ve started digging through my old crates—mixes I’ve recorded, tunes I haven’t heard in years. I figured I might as well start sharing some of them. Maybe someone else will enjoy hearing this stuff again too.

This particular mix focuses mainly on the era between 1998 and 2002—It was a curious time for me musically — after 2002 or 2003, I stepped away from Drum & Bass completely for over a decade. I just wasn’t feeling connected to the music anymore. A few tracks might fall outside that range, but that’s the vibe I was aiming for. Going through the records, I found a good few that have really stood the test of time. Of course, I’ve got plenty from that era that haven’t aged well—but I left those out ;-)

This set is a bit longer than my recent ones. It starts off a bit wobbly—chalk that up to getting my hands back into the flow of vinyl—but settles in nicely after a few mixes. The records sound great, and honestly, it’s just been a joy to revisit these old tunes.

The recording was made using a TDK SA-X cassette, a premium blank tape from 1988, celebrated for its exceptional sound quality. The TDK SA-X series employed EUR (Extra Uniform Response) Super Precision Anti-Resonance technology, designed to minimize vibrations and unwanted resonance during playback and recording. This innovation ensured outstanding sound fidelity, especially for high-frequency audio. As a Type II (high bias) cassette, the SA-X offered a wider frequency range and improved dynamic response compared to standard tapes, making it a top choice for audiophiles and professional recording enthusiasts.

The recording device was a Pioneer CT-W606DR, a high-end dual cassette deck renowned for its advanced features, including Dolby C noise reduction. This noise reduction system significantly reduced tape hiss during playback, enhancing clarity, particularly in quieter passages of music. The CT-W606DR was also highly regarded for its ability to capture the nuances of sound with precision, making it a favorite among those seeking high-quality analog recordings.

The same Pioneer CT-W606DR deck was used for playback and digital conversion (ripping). This model featured the FLEX (Frequency Level Expander) system, which compensates for the natural degradation of audio signals over time. As tapes age, they often lose upper-frequency response, resulting in dull or muffled audio. The FLEX system restores some of this lost treble, ensuring that the digital rip retains as much of the original sound quality as possible, despite any wear the tape may have endured.

In summary, the pairing of the high-performance TDK SA-X tape with the advanced Pioneer CT-W606DR deck—featuring Dolby C noise reduction and FLEX playback enhancement—delivers exceptional audio fidelity. Together, they preserve the richness, clarity, and detail of the original recording, both in analog and digital formats.
