Two years ago this week I wrote and recorded “24” at @stalley crib in Atlanta 2018, well before the passing of Kobe. My artist name back in the day was CL, still a nickname my close ones call me to this day. While rapping as CL, I was learning the ins and outs of different flows, mastering hooks and everything needed to become a polished MC. In 2011, I dropped a mixtape titled Never Looking Back and I legit never looked back on my rapping career after that. To me, CL was my “8” in both rapping and journalism because I was young, hungry, ambitious but also very green. “24” represents my true awakening and realization of me becoming Carl Lamarre — the true version of myself as a man, journalist, son, friend and MC. This photo was taken by @blackdynamite91 the day Kobe passed. When Kobe died, I was inside the Staples Center preparing for my first red carpet appearance at the Grammys. I was fucked up, but I knew Mamba wouldn’t have wanted me to give up while operating on music’s biggest stage and most importantly, in the house that he built.
