Sleep Forever

Have you ever woken up after a dream and wished you could just fall asleep and go back there? No? Just me then. That’s the idea behind this song. What if you could live your whole life inside your own dream. Sacrifice the real world for one you created.

Sleep Forever is probably the simplest song I’ve ever written. It’s all based around one chord progression: G, Am, Em9. The acoustic guitar at the very end was the way I originally played the chords when I came up with it, and I did at one time have guitar in the intro playing that, but decided it sounded better with just the keyboards and drums.

 Like most songs I record, I had a lot of lyrics that I didn’t end up using. For example, the chorus, which is now quite simple, had a lot more lyrics:

“Why can’t we sleep forever?
Why can’t we dream ‘til death?
Wake when father-time says that there’s no time left
Why can’t we sleep forever?”

 I struggled to come up with a vocal arrangement/melody for that part, before I decided it might be better just as a kind of simpler, choral section (the way you hear it).

You might also note there’s no guitar solo. The main reason for this is that there is a bass guitar solo and there just wasn’t a place for one.

My favourite part of the song is the verse guitar riff. Wouldn’t be much on its own, but played over those chords... Love it.
