For many Afrikaans Hip hop supporters in the Western Cape and the rest of South Africa respectively the announcement of a new Afrikaans Hip hop group came as a sudden surprise. It is however a natural and organic amalgamation which took place and it was bound to happen as HemelBesem, Linkris and YOMA have been working together very closely over the last year or so.

Die Salwing is a collective that was established to serve as a creative vent/outlet for each of the 3 artists involved. A creative outlet which allows each emcee explore and push new sonic boundaries. Die Salwing is literally translated as "The Anointing". It is interpreted differently by each of the three emcees...

mr rish is a bilingual rapper/songwriter based in the 012 of South Africa. He prides himself on his unique and intricate flow which he developed over the years by listening to the likes of Eminem, Yelawolf, MGK, Jack Parow and PH FAT to name a few. He focuses on making songs that a wide variety of people can relate to, based on situations that he himself has experienced in the past.

mr rish, or “Rish” as his friends call him, started rapping back in 2007. He fell in love with the rap game when he was tasked with a school project to write a song. Upon receiving full marks for the project, he realised that rapping was his passion, and it afforded him a way to express his feelings when at times he couldn’t do so otherwise. He entered the schools talent show under the “Own Composition” category and won the category 5 years in a row before matriculating.

He attended the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) and majored in Music Production, in attempt to further his skills as a musician and learn everything he needed to know in order to become an artist. It was during his time at ASE that he released his first demo, titled “The Real Ish Demo” and started work on his first album, “Writers Block”, shortly afterwards. It was in early 2016 when he met his close friend and now DJ, Jarren van Eeden, aka Reverse, and the pair have been gigging together ever since. He also released an EP later that year, called the Experi Mental EP, which was somewhat of an experimental phase for him.

mr rish refers to himself as the “Real Ish”, simply because he focuses on authenticity in his rhymes. He loves rapping about current situations that are relatable to most people and portraying his true identity to the public, despite what people/critics say. His newest song “Who I Am” from the Experi-Mental EP has quoted him saying:
“…and I make it known that I don’t give a sh**, if you think I’m strange, if you think I’m weird. B***h I don’t give a sh**! It’s who I am, I’m f***ing proud of it!”

You can think of his sound as a mashup of Jack Parow, PHFAT, Yelawolf and Eminem, as those are his main influences when it comes to making music for the local and international scene. He thrives on deeper topics when it comes to writing lyrics, but he may surprise you every now and then with a track you can vibe to at a party or in your car, but not in front of your mom.

Possibly one of the biggest milestones in mr rish’s career is when he opened for Jack Parow at Arcade Empire in the Spring of 2017. He has also had (and still has) radio airplay of his one song called “Rymkletser” on a local radio station called Tuks FM, and he has written, recorded and mixed his own album called Writers Block, which released in the summer of 2014.

mr rish has released one demo, one album, one EP and numerous singles throughout the years. He is currently working on a few projects in the build up to his next album, which he plans on releasing some time. He strives to work with the local talent around him and considers this a top priority, as he builds on his foundation to become one of the best rappers in South Africa.
