"While visiting Kharag I was mesmerised by the skill of the blacksmiths there. Hammer blow after hammer blow, constant like a drummer's rhythm, precise to within fractions of an inch, all while working beneath the heat of a roaring forge. Magnificent.

I watched and listened to them toil for many hours - until eventually they shooed me away, telling me in no uncertain terms to 'buy something or bugger off.' Apparently my staring had been making them uncomfortable. Could they not see I was merely basking in reflected glory?

No matter. I have recreated their labours for you here, so that you as well may enjoy the sounds of craftsmanship (without the foul temper that accompanies)."

"The traveller finds themselves in a city. A city that is ponderously normal, seemingly stuck in a distant memory. To the traveller it brings the memory of a tipped cart. The wheels spin and spin, but it goes nowhere.

The sounds bubbling above the heads of the crowd are simple sounds. They are privileged sounds, and they are ignorant sounds; the chatter of people about their day. Some voices shout to others from a distance, while others mutter low the day’s needs for memory’s sake.

The noise and general murmur are strong and chaotic, yet the scene feels undeniably and unstintingly quiet. It isn’t just quiet. It is hushed. It mixes in well with the smell of spoiled meat and other heat-soured goods. There is a tension, a truth unspoken, left to fester in the corner of people’s awareness.

This is the largest city the traveller has ever seen, but it too, feels empty. People are missing though nobody seems capable of looking to the empty spaces in the crowd. 

Heads are down. People walk, bent forward with an air of hesitation and weight as they shout their wares to the air, hoping habits of the past will settle the cloud that hangs over this place."

"The endless deserts of this world are as oceans - vast, perilous, and uncrossable to all but those peoples who have mastered them over generations. Peoples such as the Karaa - the nomads of the sand seas - are secretive, offering passage only to those that pay a high price in sapphires, or those chosen few outsiders who have worked to gain their trust.

For a month I travelled with the Karaa, part of a desert caravan from the great city of Davan to the jungles that fringe the desert's west. And while they would scarcely speak to me, I was privileged enough to hear, one night, one of their sacred songs.

I recreate it here for you now, alongside the sandstorm that had raged outside our tent. There was surely magic in those drums. You cannot help but feel it."

"Many times have I found myself resting before a crackling campfire, surrounded by the sounds of the forest trail. The chirp of crickets, the rolling of thunder off of distant hills, the snap and hiss of the wood amongst the flames - often have they been my sole companions on those weary nights (as many times I travelled these vast realms alone), or my fellow travellers lie as I do in quiet contemplation, surrendered to the long day's end.

"Ah, the Dahurian Academy. I am lucky enough to travelled there twice - once when visiting a scholarly friend who had residency, then once again for... well, the same reason. You see, one of the academy's defining features is its winding, labyrinthine halls, in which on my first trip I had managed to become quite lost.

Despite ending up dazed and dehydrated, I did have ample chance to explore the academy's unique acoustics. So conducive are some of its halls to sound that, standing at one end, one can hear a whisper from the far other end, clear as if the whisperer were standing besides you. Rumour has it that Queen Rhabast the Wise, the academy's founder, had the halls designed like this deliberately, so that her spies could listen out for talk of treason, or the dissemination of forbidden lore (though the scholars there assure me that this is not the case, and strongly deny that any such lore ever existed).

I never did meet up with my friend. Alyssa, if you are reading this, I still need to return your book to you."

"I will admit - travel by sea makes me... queasy. On my recent journey to Sampairo from the Jewelled Coast, I threw up no less than eight times, even once managing to get it into the ocean.

I have found only two methods of settling my rebellious stomach: an elixir made of peppermint and clubroot (in truth it is a tea, though my apothecary insists I call it an 'elixir'), and focusing intently on the sounds of my surroundings. The creak and groan of the hull, the crashing of waves against wood, the patter of spray upon the deck - all of this has calmed me, and helped distract me from my upheaving guts.

I can only hope you find these sounds as medicinal as I have (and do try the tea - it truly does help)."

"Many years ago I found myself quite lost in the great forests of Aradesia. Thunder had begun to boom across the mountains and I knew that if I did not find shelter soon, I would risking freezing in the night when the storm came.

It was then that I discovered the place that would haunt my dreams for years to come.

The house was old, and falling apart, its timbers groaning in the wind as I approached. I thought it must have been abandoned. I was right - in a sense.

I only hope that in recreating the sounds of that accursed place, I have not in some way brought whatever presence dwelt there here into the now. I pray that it remains there, hidden in the woods."

"It is said that the monks of the Il'Chanra mountains do not sleep; they do not eat, nor drink, nor ever leave the grounds of their temple. Whatever force seemingly sustains them, it permits a life of intense and cloistered monofocus, their every hour turned entirely toward prayer, and ritual, and solemn contemplation.

Of course, it is also said that the wise women of Brapat can tell your future by how you wear your hat, and that the priests of Dorsi all transform into ducks when in the presence of silverware.

Still, one cannot help but wonder. I had visited the monks' temple, once, and while they did not let me in, I lingered there, ear pressed to the door, long enough to hear the sounds of some secret ceremony within. I recreate it for you here - and as you listen, do not be surprised if you feel neither fatigue nor hunger."
