Back around 2000 when I still lived in the Bay, I got a call from Kenny "The Tick" Salcido at Grand Royal. Adam (Yauch) was in NY putting the finishing touches on the Beastie Boys Anthology DVD for Criterion. It was an ambitious project that lent itself to Adam's love of film and filmmaking. Every Beastie Boys video up to that point (I think except for the Def Jam stuff) would be included and would also feature additional audio tracks for each video, where multiple remixes would play in perfect sync. Nothing like this had ever been done before. And I was asked to be a part of it. I was sent via FedEx 3 DAT tapes, each containing acapellas for the following songs for me to remix: "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump" and So What 'Cha Want". I could try and remix all three if I so desired. The only catch? Whatever I did needed to be in Adam's hands within 48 hours. "If only I had more time" is what I kept repeating in my head over and over again. "Even one more day and I could at least have two of these remixes in the can." It was not to be. I ended up submitting a remix to "Hey Ladies" which made it to the final DVD. People seemed to dig it and I was of course very proud and honored to be a part of it all (not to mention happier than a pig in shit being awash in dozens of free Criterion DVDs). But the rushed nature of the situation always left me wondering what I could've done under different circumstances. So, not long afterwards and just for shits and giggles, I ended up taking the acapellas for both "Shake Your Rump" and "So What 'Cha Want" and remixing them on my own time. What follows is a version of the latter. The master for which had remained in a shoe box for the last 17 some odd years. Aside from a few cuts here and there, this is just what it sounded like back then. I used Southside Movement's "I've Been Watching You" as the basis for the track - which can also be heard, in a more camouflaged fashion, throughout the Beastie's original. Hope you dig...
