PREMIERE: Danvers - Angel Break [SlothBoogie]

1080p effectively skipped the ageing process and matured into a fine ole vintage immediately. It would be a little unfair to the rest, if we weren't so consistently blessed with beautiful, beatific jams.  I Want To Believe, a fresh cassette from Montreal-via-Vancouver fresh face Project Pablo, doesn't come anywhere near close to breaking the spell.

"Follow it Up" exhibits that same care and warmth that has fast become an indelible 1080p trademark. The jaunty track practically mewls with contentment, with gentle piano stabs, skippy drum beat and flecks of jazz in the percussion combining to something instantly familiar, perhaps played at a 1.25x pace. Throw it on and shake off the holiday gluttony.

Project Pablo "Follow It Up" - Boiler Room Debuts

A sublime expedition from Brazil to the sky, “Modo Avião” (Airplane Mode) sees São Paulo based trio Caixa Cubo jet further forth from the lineage of Brazilian instrumental music.

Following in the footsteps of heroes like Azymuth, Antonio Adolfo, Cesar Mariano and Marcos Resende, with the tried and tested trifecta of synthesizers, bass and drums, Caixa Cubo have carved out their own idiosyncratic ideal of golden-era Brazilian jazz-funk and samba-jazz.

Encapsulating the vitality and experimentalism synonymous with Sao Paulo’s musical history, Caixa Cubo playfully straddle the elegant and the surreal, with masterful songwriting and the consummate musicianship of longtime friends and bandmates Henrique Gomide (keyboards) Noa Stroeter (bass) João Fideles (drums).

Caixa Cubo have been playing together for over 14 years - and that’s ‘playing’ in the truest sense of the word. As bassist Noa Stroeter explains: 

“A story, a joke, images, invented words, people we met on tour, places, fictitious or not, have always been part of our creative process. And they are precious materials beyond the musical work itself. This dynamic has stayed with us to this day, and for me it is the characteristic that guarantees that no matter what, we will have fun working.”

Presenting a contemporary reimagining of Brazilian grooves from the 1970s, Modo Avião marks an evolution for Caixa Cubo’s music which delves deeper into the tradition of Brazilian instrumental music, while continuing to develop its rhythmic and harmonic possibilities. Utilising an extensive understanding of Brazilian music history and Brazilian rhythm in particular, the group explore the seemingly endless possibilities of fusing carnaval marches, frevo and Baião, with jazz, MPB and funk.

Recent Caixa Cubo releases include 2023’s “Agora”, which featured guest vocalists including Xênia França and Zé Leônidas; and 2020’s "Angela," which was hailed by BBC 6 Music, Gilles Peterson, and Bandcamp as one of the best albums of the year. 
Caixa Cubo have performed at Jazzahead! in 2022 (Germany), Jazz à Vienne (France), Riverboat Jazz Festival (Denmark), Breda Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Blue Note São Paulo (Brazil) and Jazzkeller Frankfurt (Germany) 

This November Caixa Cubo will tour Europe, with performances in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands and France. 

Modo Avião releases on Vinyl LP, CD and digitally on the 15th November 2024 via Far Out Recordings.

Kapote is back with a new EP. The Berlin based head of Toy Tonics, passionate vinyl digger and DJ comes back with 3 new tracks.  As always the Kapote’s music is hard to file under one genre. "I hate clichees in dance music" he says. "My DJ sets are never committed to just one style and so i want my EPs to be more open than most DJ records are."
In fact - if you ever heard Kapote playing records you will recognize his amazing ability to create a flow out of very different records. He might start with downtempo Hip Hop, swap into mid tempo french house and fly over to broken beats and techno in just one hour. The main connections: he loves Funk. And he has a groove.  And like his DJ selector style are his own productions: On the new EP he starts with a very deep, sample based 118 bpm house track: Temptation. Quite similar to the mood of the recent Black Loops or Coeo tracks on Toy Tonics. But already with the second tune he leaves the usual house 4/4 groves and comes up with a - 100% sample free - jazz house mid tempo shaker. A lovely track that has a jumping beat and chord combination that is very hard to classify. It might remind certain stuff coming out in the mid 1990ies dance jazz scene. Kapote produced this track with a little help by his Toy Tonics brother Munk, who played all the bass and synths on this track. The final track then goes hard into the breakbeat funk corner. These beats are so dirty. The keyboard solo - a Moog played by Munk again - is so funcked up. Sick. Yeah, this could be hard to be played in "normal sets". It’s really music for the freaks. But the freaks come out at night.. and Mr.Kapote loves the freaky shit.. as he does love jazz and funk. You can hear that.

In an age increasingly dominated by faceless machine-created sounds, DJ-Producer Rebecca Vasmant is bringing a fresh new twist to dance music with her love of jazz, the original form of unbridled spiritual sonic expression. Rebecca is a passionate record collector and her knowledge exceeds her time as a "digger".

While promoting her own parties and record fair in Glasgow, starting her record label Schiehallion and touring the world over the past years, her whirlwind schedule has fitted in sessions with eight-strong Ghanaian outfit Kakatsitsi, as a live fusion show mixing traditional African rhythms with modern dance ingredients; two strains of dancefloor- friendly catharsis joining together in a vibrant new mutant. As well as working on her 'Glasgow Jazz Experiment which features world class musicians from The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, her talents are not only in spinning records, but in composing and live shows also.

Rebecca has already made a name in Glasgow with her residency at Sub Club, Made In Glasgow and Know The Way parties, running a popular record fair with the venerable Sub Club and a monthly spot on BBC Radio Scotland playing contemporary records in an attempt to bridge the gap between much abused but crucial genres and the electronic scene. She also airs this facet of her irrepressible musical passion at key events like the Glasgow Jazz Festival, Kasheme Zurich, Casper Montenegro and the Baltic Soul Weekender, Waunderlust and Le Melletron Paris, as well as recent high profile gigs curated by Mixmag, like TRNSMT Festival and many others.

Renowned UK clubs which have been treated to Rebecca’s sublime house and techno sets include a two year residency at Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire, the Sub Club and The Arches in Glasgow, Aberdeen’s Snafu, Dundee’s Reading Room, We Love... at Manchester’s Sankey’s, Leeds’ Back To Basics and London niteries including MOS and East Village. She has also played festivals including Rockness, Kelburn, T in The Park and Wickerman, plus Ibiza spots such as Space, Savannah and Zoo Project.

Rebecca’s activities have taken her to play in 22 countries, including premiere spots in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Estonia, India, Africa, Nicaragua, Bosnia, Latvia, Dubai, Austria, Turkey, Serbia, Algeria and Bulgaria.

This year, she has released a remix of Norwegian duo Perfume with Hot Gem recordings, and in September is set to release an EP on Made In Glasgow Recordings which is a collaborative effort with Perseus Traxx. The end of the year will also see a release of her solo EP of disco and jazz tinged house.
