Mr Bongo proudly announces the first single from Don Glori’s forthcoming third album ‘Paper Can’t Wrap Fire’. The cornerstone of the LP, 'Brown Eyes' is a joyous soul-jazz groover featuring the captivating lead male vocals of fellow Melbourne/Naarm local, ML Hall. On first listen you’d be mistaken for thinking this is a straight-up love song. Yet underneath its uplifting soulful flavours and sultry vocals, lies a deeper topic at play.

‘Brown Eyes’ discusses the comfort of seeking and finding your community when you had previously felt like an outsider. As Don mentions, “This song is about feeling 'othered' in a predominantly white society like Australia. The first verse is about being tokenised/tolerated and having to stake your claim to a place at the table. The second verse and hook are about finding people who have a shared history with you and feeling at ease around them. When you meet another person like that, and you don’t have to explain all the above, it’s a comforting feeling.” 

“It was the first song I wrote start to finish for the record, starting with the opening riff on the piano. I was taking a lot of cues from Jordan Rakei’s cover of Donald Byrd’s ‘Wind Parade’, as well as throwing in a nod to The Doobie Brothers inserting hooks where they shouldn’t be.”

The result is an empowering hit of jazz-injected soul, nourished by a funk flavour. A track that ebbs and flows between sections of sweeping tenderness and head-nodding, bassline-heavy grooves. Crisp swung drums, masterful keys and those honeyed vocals from Hall, backed with lush harmonies from Ruby Dargaville, Isadora Lauritz, and Bianca Kyriacou, combine to send you cruising out across the horizon.

His music has landed him among the most popular tracks on social media and it’s easy to see why! California-based artist Antonio Barret is back with his new single, ‘In the Dirt’. His young career is off to a strong start, especially after his track 2 AM lit up TikTok trends last year. This new pop-infused single is groovy and danceable, featuring Antonio’s signature vocals : a perfect blend of raspy and smooth.

Qwalia is the experimental, improvisational home for a quartet of some of London’s most prolific and inspiring musicians. 

Led by drummer Yusuf Ahmed (Joy Crookes, Anoushka Shankar, Unknown to Known), much of the band’s music to date surfaced in a single two-day session at the Fish Factory in Willesden, West London. 

Although improvisational at its core, the band’s fluency and innate musicality makes it hard at times to believe these pieces weren’t written and developed over weeks, rather than conjured in the moment, with no prior rehearsal. Qwalia’s music is an instinctive aural expression of how things seemed in the moment of creation.

Featuring Ben Reed on bass (Frank Ocean, David Byrne, Richard Russell’s Everything Is Recorded), Tal Janes on Guitar (Jordan Rakei, Cherise, Waaju) and Joseph Costi on keys and synths (Cat Stevens, Tom Herbert, Heidi Vogel), the band’s debut album ‘Sound And Reason’ was released by Alberts Favourites in March 2023.

This beautiful version of Elevator Company was recorded in Yusuf's living room last spring for a live video promoting the 2nd album Abbreviations. The band rarely, if ever, replay music they've already recorded, so this is a unique moment and one we're incredibly happy to be able to share.

This one was an unexpected treat. Two of our favourite contemporary musicians, Finn Rees & Sholto coming together and collaborating on a double dose of celestial, cinematic alchemy.

At Mr Bongo we are massive admirers of drummer, musician, and producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson). His two albums on Funk Night Records and DeepMatter Records, had both been highlights of their respective years. We’d gotten to know Oscar and sent him a few records. Included in the package was Australian pianist-composer Finn Rees’ debut album, Dawn Is A Melody, which was one of our favourite releases on Mr Bongo in 2024.

In Oscar's words 'For me it was a standout modern jazz record - encapsulating a spiritual / hazy dreamy soundscape which hugely resonated with me. Glissando keys and harp with lush melodies, I was instantly intrigued.”  

The pair started following each other online and as luck would have it, Finn was staying in London for the summer season, so they arranged to meet. The pair instantly clicked and said it felt like they'd known each other for years. After 40 minutes of chatting, they started to jam. 

'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were recorded over two days - a track a day in Oscar's SFJ studios. Laid down on mostly analogue equipment, the pair utilised Wurlitzer’s, mellotrons, and ribbon mics through Oscar’s ‘70s Studer desk. Composed and crafted without any real intentions, other than a shared appreciation for the same style of music and approach, the tracks started to take shape. The results were as lush, nostalgic and textured as you’d expect from these two brilliant musicians, with a classical feel inspired by artists such as Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, and Henry Mancini. 

For the beautiful string arrangements, the pair recruited the talents of Sholto's long-time friend and collaborator Clementine Brown (Penguin Cafe Orchestra) and Matthew Hayes of 30/70, Allysha Joy, Xpress Point, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange fame, was brought in to play bass on 'Bluebell'.

So here we have it, a chance collaborative project built on two musicians' mutual respect for each other's outputs. The result is truly breathtaking.

In an age increasingly dominated by faceless machine-created sounds, DJ-Producer Rebecca Vasmant is bringing a fresh new twist to dance music with her love of jazz, the original form of unbridled spiritual sonic expression. Rebecca is a passionate record collector and her knowledge exceeds her time as a "digger".

While promoting her own parties and record fair in Glasgow, starting her record label Schiehallion and touring the world over the past years, her whirlwind schedule has fitted in sessions with eight-strong Ghanaian outfit Kakatsitsi, as a live fusion show mixing traditional African rhythms with modern dance ingredients; two strains of dancefloor- friendly catharsis joining together in a vibrant new mutant. As well as working on her 'Glasgow Jazz Experiment which features world class musicians from The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, her talents are not only in spinning records, but in composing and live shows also.

Rebecca has already made a name in Glasgow with her residency at Sub Club, Made In Glasgow and Know The Way parties, running a popular record fair with the venerable Sub Club and a monthly spot on BBC Radio Scotland playing contemporary records in an attempt to bridge the gap between much abused but crucial genres and the electronic scene. She also airs this facet of her irrepressible musical passion at key events like the Glasgow Jazz Festival, Kasheme Zurich, Casper Montenegro and the Baltic Soul Weekender, Waunderlust and Le Melletron Paris, as well as recent high profile gigs curated by Mixmag, like TRNSMT Festival and many others.

Renowned UK clubs which have been treated to Rebecca’s sublime house and techno sets include a two year residency at Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire, the Sub Club and The Arches in Glasgow, Aberdeen’s Snafu, Dundee’s Reading Room, We Love... at Manchester’s Sankey’s, Leeds’ Back To Basics and London niteries including MOS and East Village. She has also played festivals including Rockness, Kelburn, T in The Park and Wickerman, plus Ibiza spots such as Space, Savannah and Zoo Project.

Rebecca’s activities have taken her to play in 22 countries, including premiere spots in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Estonia, India, Africa, Nicaragua, Bosnia, Latvia, Dubai, Austria, Turkey, Serbia, Algeria and Bulgaria.

This year, she has released a remix of Norwegian duo Perfume with Hot Gem recordings, and in September is set to release an EP on Made In Glasgow Recordings which is a collaborative effort with Perseus Traxx. The end of the year will also see a release of her solo EP of disco and jazz tinged house.
