Birmingham based Rebel Hill Recordings has made quite a name for itself over the last year, releasing genre defying music from label owners DustyFruit as well as key up and coming artist such as Simba, Thomas Sahs & Lee Jarvis. The recent ‘Beloved EP’ from DustyFruit saw heavy DJ support from the likes of Sasha, Huxley, T Williams, Dusky & Matt Tolfrey to name just a few and received warm reviews across international and UK press.
Now the Rebel Hill team look to a brand new talent, in the shape of US producer Alex D.Wolf. This is the debut release from the Denver based artist and is a perfect fit for Rebel Hill with its raw mix of broken beats, deep bass and deep house elements. The release kicks off with title track ‘Magik’ , an atmospheric slice of futuristic electronica drenched in pitch shifted vocal, skittering percussion and swirling FX that has you instantly hooked. This is hotly followed by the excellent ‘I Run This’ taking a techier route with its tightly compressed bass and regimented rhythms augmented by layers of white noise and subtle electro inspired percussive hits.
The penultimate track, ‘Valley of Bass’, see D.Wolf mixing up rumbling bass with old school 808 percussion and heavily delayed synths, before dropping the distinctive vocal incantations that ride across the track from beginning to end, quality stuff. Finally we have the full bore, bass workout ‘Booty Drop’, an intense closer that melds heavily chopped and effected vocals with earth shaking bass and inspired drum programming, sublime.
Rebel Hill Recordings have done it again with another stellar release and a new artist whom we are certain to be hearing more of in the months and years to come.
