If you know our history, you know that we've been good friends and worked together for a long time. I've looked up to his work ethic for years, and I can comfortably say that I would not be where I am without his advice, encouragement and overall consistent influence on my own perspective of sound.

Second Acts are often the toughest because the first act has to be pretty good to merit a follow-up. Then the comparisons are unavoidable. The sequel is rarely better than the original for this reason, expectations, and often the follow up is just misunderstood. "Speed Limit 140 BPM+ Two: More Sounds Of London Hardcore Techno" suffered a bit from this as the often forgotten sequel of breakbeat techno and Hardcore from Moonshine Records.

However Speed Limit 2 is really just different. It reflects old school breakbeat's destiny to transform into Jungle and later Drum and Bass. The happy playfulness of the first volume is still alive, yet it's sound is darker, the breaks are often twisted into more creative beats and the bass lines are starting to sound deep and brooding. It has less sped up samples and there are less of the catchy piano lines we love so much because the scene itself had changed and its sound did as well.

There are early Pre-Drum and Bass efforts on here from Goldie and DJ Aphrodite to name a few, plus a few Pre-Jungle songs by D.M.S. and Potential Bad Boy that sound pretty damn close to Jungle Proper. It's also the last release by LA based Moonshine to be released concurrently in the UK. From here on out, the rest of the series was bringing the sounds of the UK scene to a US market in retrospect, which gave them a less cutting edge feel (and they were often pretty far behind the curve).

While I did purchase this compilation, I lost it before it made any impact on me. It was one of my best friends that reintroduced me to it years later when we were raving it up in high school. Even then, the comparisons to the first comp, and the fifth were undeniable and it was treated as a lesser but fun little album from the early rave days of long ago (which, lol, was only like 3 years). 

I will never forget rediscovering the album years later during my train trip of the American West, Mid-West and South. Tapes were still common so I brought a ton my old mixtapes for the hell of it. Hearing it with fresh ears helped me find a new appreciation for it.

So when it came to producing a follow up to my original Speed Limit 140+ BPM Mix-Mash, I quickly began working on volume 2. I knew many of the songs well and enjoyed rediscovering many of them for a third time. 

I have had this mix in the can for some time, yet I could not figure out what I would do for the video. Finally, I came to the conclusion that something trippy would be suffice. Which I will probably do in future volumes. Oh and to be clear, I do plan to do a few more of these, though they may not be sequential and I probably won't do them all.

This is the better produced track that I submitted to Overclocked Remix, it has an edge over the other version. I fell in love with Mega Man 2 when on the eve of my grandfather's funeral I played it on my phone and beat it using an old emulator. I had a Treo at the time and it had a good d-pad. All of the memories from my childhood flooded back. It freed my mind and I went on to write a well-received eulogy, which is hard to do. In the aftermath of the loss and the sadness I fell on my old 8-Bit games again. I wrote this one first, though I left it incomplete for a few years until recently.

I wanted to make a party song that sounded like it fit in the metallic warehouses of party's past, that would be ideal in the industrial districts. I know that's where Metal Man would party! 

Not sure I'd want to party with a guy who can shout foot wide metal saw blades at his enemies, but still, I'll be bet he gets down on the dance floor like most of the 8-bit Capcom crew, which look one step away from busting a breakdance move.

This will be on my forth-coming album "Magic Mushroom" along with a whole host of chiptunes and video game music, both original and covered.

Rebel Sole, aka Rebel Sol, Breaking Sole, Machine Rebel and Magic Mushroom is a recording artist, visual media engineer and DJ. Hailing from sunny Southern California in the Los Angeles underground, he originally played small parties and underground raves before teaming up with DJ Rob Bassline to form Lethal Oscillation. The duo played a hand full of larger raves and massives before calling it quits. Continuing on under various pseudonyms, Rebel Sole has continued to produce underground music in various genres, from Hardcore and Hardstyle Techno to House, to Trance, to Ambient.
