Back in 2005-2006 when I was playing out the Muncie area, my band occasionally shared the same bill with a local college band called Stomping Ground. Although we don't share the same genre we were all part of the same house-show circuit of diverse musical performers. After multiple run-ins with each other we ended up becoming friends over the years. We all played different styles of music but when it came to listening to choice sines, we had a lot in common. In fact, I still keep in touch with their bass player, YG. 

College eventually came to an end and inevitably so did Stomping Ground. I mean, that's the pattern, right? It was time to graduate and move to a wealthy city with a strong economic climate. Life got in between the band and their music for about 4.5 years. I got a call from my buddy, YG, who asked me if I'd be interested in documenting a Stomping Ground reunion jam in an empty house in a seedy part of downtown Muncie that they had talked someone into letting them use for a drunken night of rocking out in a house that had no heat or running water. I obliged and this recording is proof that I'm not making this shit up.

This quality of this particular recording does a good job of capturing the energy of the night. The house we were recording in presented plenty of acoustical hurdles in addition to a lack of space. The entire documentation process was a long series of compromises. It was what it was... but they were determined to play and it was drunkenly infectious. As the beer bottles started piling up around our various stations it was obvious that this session wasn't about perfection, it was about comradery and injecting new life experiences into a familiar form of expression. The recording is pretty raw and rough but despite its imperfections, it has a timeless sound. The performance is heavy with drunk and happy spirits reunited by the thing that brought them together in the first place. Keep in mind that there are times when story and delivery will do more than make up for a poor capture.

Back when I had more time on my hands I would drag one of my four-track recorders down to my favorite record store in the Muncie area, Village Green Records. The owner, Travis, hosts incredibly choice shows in the front yard of the shop and on this particular night I was able to record a performance of Holy Ghost by Laura Stevenson and the Cans. The majority of the equipment used to make this recording was sub par but regardless, the energy is still there.
