Ho ho ho, the mystery-shrouded Rrose - named after Marcel Duchamp’s eponymous persona, punches in right on cue for Xmas with an absolute monster of a two-hour jaunt into their exquisitely twisted headspace. Having served up some of the finest techno slabs of the past decade through the likes of Sandwell District, Stroboscopic Artefacts and now their own dedicated imprint, Eaux, Rrose steps in the series with a bonkers mix of dusty techno hustle-and-bustle, neatly alternating sequences of pumping 4x4 aerobatics, searing, noise-adjacent outbursts and eerie melodies to hypnotic effect. A constant balancing act of raw power and haunting score, Rrose’s RYC mix takes us on a deep and fascinating trip into genre-unbound territories, where only abandon and wildness reign supreme. Hailing from Tokyo, Japanese DJ and producer Haruka has made a name for himself through his finely curated selections and seamless mixing technique, making him a regular of acclaimed clubs around the world, including that of our beloved friends from Tbilisi, Bassiani’s. Haruka’s polymathic sound - a blend of off-kilter techno and bouncy, genre-unbound electronics, attests to the man’s widescreen vision and engaging versatility, never settling for the obvious but looking to find new paths of expression with every set. His RYC offering doesn’t differ and delves into a wealth of rhythms and tropes, pushing back the boundaries of techno as we know it, or better, redefining it entirely.

The long running stirrings of Surgeon (Anthony Child) and Regis (Karl O’Connor) under the conjunct British Murder Boys are not for the faint of heart. Their alleged final act came before a Tokyo crowd in 2012, but the goodbye only lasted three years and with their Amsterdam return, a reformulation of their signature industrial sound. The duo, both at their acme with little signs of descent, have together found a hybrid techno that scales high and large, bringing together thumping bass and hissing feedback for a distinctly belligerent and primal club sound. It’s not all obvious, their 2020 cover of Lou Reed’s Real Good Time Together offered a machine-inflected spin on the original, and opened the door for their debut LP Active Agents And House Boys (2024). At the heart is a provocative, sexually-charged and punkish techno that offloads bristling rhythms and defiant energy, one that’s a little more controlled and mathematical in practice. Following on from their show at Bassiani back in November comes this next mix. Bassiani Podcast 250 is an hour-long and live recorded assault: thrashing beats, crazed and bleepy arps, EBM-style shouts, a decadent and rageful call to arms and one of the most important instalments in this long running series. Back-breaking industrial techno from these two heavyweights and originators of the Birmingham sound.

This mix is a cosmic, spiraling journey ~ a meditation on movement, intensity, and expansion.
