To celebrate another year on earth, I’m happy to share a mix inspired by memory and deja-vu. A diary of sound painted from fragments of the past, imagined and remembered.

Next up comes Canadian-born polymath Darwin, who’s been getting Berliners talking ever since she kicked off her event series REEF back at now defunct venue Griessmühle. Tired of providing partygoers with the same formulaic sounds they’d come to expect, she started to play around with others, dubstep and bass among them. It was a fresh approach that through persistence ended up paying off with a form that’s as animate, subaquatic and essential to its surroundings as the ocean reefs that inspired the name. A UK-leaning sound, that pays homage to breaks, drum n bass and garage and fuses it with a techno more indicative of her chosen digs. Nowadays that approach has really gained traction and her parties blossomed into something much larger, encompassing her own selections, whether at UNFOLD or closing Berghain’s Klubnacht, as well as the launch of her SPE:C imprint. Her loose selection and low-end frequencies are a modern take on a long tradition of rumbling bass and out-and-out techno, brought together with a killer instinct for the hourly requirements of a dancefloor with high expectations. Following on from her previous techno stints at Bassiani, Podcast 251 further explores this side and delves back into her roots; a studio mix brought to you from this true pioneer, mastered by bestie Esposito.

Erik Jabari is a DJ and producer, raised in Berlin and Wuppertal.
As a child, he was already surrounded by reggae, dubstep and early techno. This paved his way to learning classical music theory and clarinet, but finding more interest in jazz than classical music.
Inspired by the possibilities of making whole tracks with more than just one instrument, he began producing hip hop and electronic dance music. As an employee at Hard Wax, the Berlin record store institution, he has continuously shaped his sound over the last few years.
His music is techno centered with influences from house, dubstep, UKG and drum n bass. In his productions you can feel his appreciation of the origins of electronic music, which helped him to find his own modern sound.

His DJ sets are techno-centered, driving and powerful, but also subtle and elegant.

His DJ sets are best described as raw and classy—delivered with attention to detail, and seamless blends. Founding member of Axces Recordings and Danish DJ/producer Kasper Marott returns to the Bassiani airwaves with a Zenaari edition that studies a much more phrenic side of his musical world. Driven by instinct, his work reflects a single minded aversion to commercial orthodoxy and the regular grind of a 40 hour work week: it’s all about feeling and a passion for creating the sounds that have kept him and his Copenhagen crew together, ‘nature, friends, family, home’. Forget the springy beats and dulcet melodies this time round, here is something entirely different and new. In stark contrast to his catalogue of jovial anthems, the likes of breakthrough hit Keflavik and 2021’s Mini Trance, Kasper’s inward-looking work slows those rhythms right down and investigates the possibilities of a sound much more restricted in palette. It’s a surprising turnaround for someone whose name evokes the breezy basslines of open-air jaunts, one packed with vibrating synths, understated instrumentals, and the electronic crackling of a wood fire on a balmy summer night. Zenaari Mix 018 is Kasper Marott like you’ve never heard him before, far from the dancefloor and burdening constraints of a rave context, Zenaari gives his inner world a voice, and the result is a rich, human and deep-toned 67 minute cut recorded in studio for this latest in the series.

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.

Swiss DJ/Producer Audrey Danza debuts for the Bassiani Podcast series with an hour and a half of her own music, composed mostly of her unreleased tracks as well as a few exciting collaborations. From tripped-out techno, to house and trance bent rhythms, this mix shows that Audrey’s course has been nothing short of impressive, from Geneva and now Berlin. Since her intro to the local scene back in 2019, she’s racked up a residency at multidisciplinary event space Motel Campo, played clubs from Panorama Bar to Circoloco to Robert Johnson and Fabric, and, as a means of rereleasing lost 80-90s records at first (and now her own productions as well), kicked off her label Proxima in 2020. She’s also been active in the world of Berlin nightlife, where she relocated since 2022, with frequent collabs with the Sound Metaphors family, from party series to collaborations around her label. On top of a busy schedule and a growing pile of remixes and from the ground up productions, Audrey stays the course. Her sound is a fusion of industrial beats and percussions, acid, 90s synths house, self-aware and constantly cross-referencing to sculpt a fleshed out world of sound that’s psychedelic and deeply immersive. Bassiani Podcast 268 is a signature mix of warped transmissions and assembly line beats, a gradual burn and sharp ascent to peak-time techno compiled by a leading light of the Swiss electronic music scene.
