In an age of hyper-consumption, the present can seem like an eternity. Regardless of how deeply one may feel to be aware of this fact, it is hard to shake free from its grip. After a long day's work we’ve got responsibilities, whether personal or familial, that need attended to in a space of time which more often than not is woefully inadequate. To quell the discomfort of this reality, we reach for an array of widely available sedatives requiring the least of us before repeating this cycle the next day. In musical terms, this usually means 3 minute fantasies few ever get to experience or unresolved traumas being hurled at us over top of a catchy melody and heavy bass; this is hardly fulfilling, to say the least. Understandably so, this leaves many yearning for the “good ol’ days”, but with the vast history of soul fulfilling music created worldwide, it would be criminal to relegate these creations to the past; just as the wheel has not outlived it usefulness, all good music maintains its utility as a tool to reinvigorate the spirit; the dreams of tomorrow are created in the present from foundations laid in the past. The challenge of today is not to dwell on what once was or was not but rather to envision what can be. This collection of music was carefully selected in order to strengthen our spiritual resolve as we work towards building the tomorrow which we all rightfully deserve, together.

The true gift of music is its fluidity and transformative state. So much of our existence is based on fixed and unchanging, even predetermined confluences that dictate our life flow – intervals of time, DNA, magnetism… These things typically influence us, not the other way around. 

However, music is constantly changing, adapting, evolving, being reinvented. Skin drum rhythms become Zildjian laced 14" brass snare and 18x22" kick drum kits before being imitated beat for beat by the beatbox. Sheet music went to acetate before it reached the MP3 state. And African rhythms became Blues before Rock N Roll took hold and was pressed up and placed on the one’s and two’s to be used by Hip Hop DJ’s….only to be remixed. 

Therein lies the beauty. The ebb and flow of its malleable nature and ability to morph is the oceanside sunset of music’s existence. It’s never finished. It only exists as an incomplete opus. What we hear is merely what it is to us in that moment. 

So when PVD’s declaration to Let The Horns Blow was pressed, that imprint only served as a captured sound of an evolving presence. What we didn’t hear yet was the next step in that process. The lava-lamp-like nature of its continuous change became other musicians’ playthings. A Brooklyn based duo; a New Brunswick, New Jersey MC; a Columbus, Ohio band; and a rapper named Darryl each added a new chapter to the ongoing saga of PVD’s music in flux. Fancy Colors added…well, a colorful new element to “Forth n Back.” Silent Knight took “Afro” out for a spin and brought it back with a new attitude. Osage slid into “Break” and put it together again, but with a twist. It took the reunion of Lux DeVille to turn “On The Good Foot” into a funkier version of itself. 

These are remixes but that isn’t what this project is about. 
This is about the shapeshifting of music. This is about what artists add to the palette they’re given. This is about the oscillations and variations of sound and music. This is just one version – a stasis in an evolution – of a sound that originated in the heart and mind of PVD. Yes, these are the remixes. But they’re also something new with the essence of Let The Horns Blow. Because music…its beauty is in its fluidity.

PUTS has always celebrated youth culture and people from all walks of life, social classes, ideologies, identities, religions and countries. 20 years of touring opened my mind to the most powerful force in human nature - unity.  And, while many may choose to privately grumble about the current divisive state of America, I can no longer remain silent as Trump and the RNC undermine objective reality. There is truth. There is real news. It is happening in front of our eyes, indisputable - just as sure as they called climate change a "chinese hoax" to selling out our national parks and oceans to the very real effort to subvert reality through social media manipulation and bots. Dog Whistles

While their tunes have graced pop, R&B and smooth jazz radio for decades, Sade's music has always been out of the box and ahead of its time. "Make Some Room" was the B-side of their 1988 single "Nothing Can Come Between Us", and a recent discovery of ours. Unlike most of the band's music, this track features the group's production in the foreground while lead singer Sade Adu's sparse, sultry vocals complement the soundscape. Like any great song worth covering, this track provided an intriguing palette that compelled us to put some paint where it ain't-- with a little help from Vaughan Octavia on the vocals and Brother Spanky on percussion.
