When we first heard the tracks that are now part of this EP we were convinced an Italian producer from the 90’s had just dusted off a pack of DATS from his archives. Little we knew that Derral was a young, fresh and very talented gentleman from the outskirts of Barcelona. The 4 tracks on this OCD release are reminiscent of what it could be heard in Italy’s Riviera Adriatica legendary clubs in the early 90’s or on labels like UMM, MBG, or Heartbeat and the whole EP is a sneak peak into the promising future Derral has ahead of him.

After the enormous reaction to the first Hi-lux Remix for Champion (Red Eye – Kut It) Champion A&R Head Johnny Walker (one of the Original Ibiza 4) straight away saw the impact that that first Hi-Lux remix had on the dance floor (and the records sales figures) so asked for another Hi-Lux remix of ‘Somebody To Touch Me’ before the first Hi-Lux release of ‘Feel it’.

Yet another Piano Dance track which needed a Hi-Lux remix to freshen up. This was 95 and by now although still a strong foundation for dance music, ‘piano house’ was moving out of the late 80s/early 90s scene and was starting to become a bit of an ‘Korg M1’ dance pop overload.

This was such a great vocal to work with and a full ‘song’ rather than just short samples which was a first and a new challenge. I decided to flip the arrangement on it’s head and break away from the norm whereas you’d have traditional verse/breakdown/chorus songs, ‘Somebody’ I knew was such a strong vocal and had the potential to withstand a fresh new arrangement approach…….. my thinking was to keep the track sparse through the intro and build up and then give the verses all the space by having them in the breakdown.... this style then became a Hi-Lux remix trademark.

Butter Side Up’s 12th release, Weekend at Raymond’s Place’ comes from San Diego’s hotly tipped John Manhard. A densely textured and unpredictable six-track EP whose languid groove and swing will sound equally sweet warming up a dancefloor or late into the following day. 

Based in LA and resident of cult party V:isions, John’s been on a roll of late, with releases on the likes of Mui Mui, Perfect Timings & InTheBagg (alongside Dylan Payne) cementing him as a singular producer with an impressively broad reference board. 

The EP’s first track, ‘Shake Your Body’ immediately gets under the skin, a bouncy groove and synth-line pulling you under its command. Over the next 30-odd minutes the spell doesn’t lift - deep house tropes twist and turn playfully over shuffling breaks and swinging basslines, reminiscent of West-Coast house’s finer moments. Manhard’s studio-craft and ear for the unpredictable give a fresh perspective to a much revered and distinctively Pacific-coast sound.

This is music for the fuzzy margins either side of peak time. It’s fitting that Hamish first met and heard John’s music at a hazy afters in LA back in 2022, drawn to a selection of tracks which were largely his own. Two years later these ideas have refined to form another stellar release on BSU, complete with original artwork from Max Binski and scheduled for release in early Ocober.

When they met few years ago in the funkiest vineyard of Occitanie (FR), @pmrty and @admo had a lot to tell each other. So much they started to feel the need of a musical journey together, barking in harmony. One thing leading to another, the two producers decided it was about time they’d put their skills to the test - and after countless CBD-Free jam sessions on some couches in Berlin, the @alpyren project was born. A duet project - four hands and twenty fingers (quick maths) - tailored for the floor and inspired by the quirkiest afters vibes. Their creativity is unleashed in this project, and they really let it all out. 

This new 3-tracker, made in Charlottenzbeul, evokes the thrill of the unknown - you don’t know where you’re going, but you’re getting there through tech-house. A dismal sound which catches you by the collar and transcends you. A Cold Case investigation, where you’re nowhere to be found - except on the dance floor.
