TECHNO SL - 01

Just as we thought we reached the tipping point of the pandemic, things turned around and the city of Berlin closed its clubs or prohibited dancing at the very least. We could put our heads in the sand (or snow) and let negative emotions guide us .. or we can use this time to take another compulsary break and get creative. To help all of you get through December, we invited buddy and creative mind Horkheimer for a hour of deep & atmospheric tunes.

Born in 1988, music in a diverse array of forms was an enduring backdrop for Horkheimer’s youth. It all started by listening to punk rock, while years of riding bmx and continued in the early 2000’s with various rap and hip hop tunes. Horkheimer started to get into the electronic music thing through his former roommate, who introduced him to house and techno music and showed him the way into deejaying.

Horkheimer is spanning a wide-range style of techno in his Dj-sets, from dub and deep to hi-hat-driven grooves or even spaced-out electronica. DJing took him from Frankfurts AMP Bar, Offenbachs Robert Johnson, IFZ, Staub at Berlins ://about blank to New Yorks Bossa Nova Civic Club. Besides DJing Horkheimer is also one part of the duo Форм with Aleksei Maier, whose first release came via 2020 released Lifesaver 4 Compilation on Live at Robert Johnson and a few more to be out in a not so far future.

In 2018 he founded Klinika Musik in cooperation with photographer and graphic designer Florian David and came up with its first release. The label is focused on the darker side of electronic music and open to a variety of different styles.

In January 2020 Horkheimer started working as A/R for Live at Robert Johnson, the in-house label of the well-known Offenbach nightclub in cooperation with Ata.

For Loser Records Horkheimer compressed a full club night into this 1 hour set. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and the dancfloor is all yours.

Over the past few years, somewhat mysteriously, @Volster has gradually become one of the most noted figures of the Croatian electronic scene, leaving his signature through production, DJing, event organisation and running a label imprint: @secessionrec.

The main subculture Marko was positively exposed to in the 90’s was techno, a style he has been practising for almost two decades now. As he was performing within and outside the Croatian borders, Volster gradually started experimenting and developing his signature textured sound leading him to sing and publish his work across his own labels and others such as Edit Select, @Vakum-Records and @northallsenrecords to name a few. 

To this day, Volster has performed all across Europe ranging from clubs to festivals like Dimensions Festival and Modem Festival which brought him to his most notable appearance and debut performance at @berghain in September 2019.

This selection contains a melange of tracks from my first three mixes when I started to upload in public here on SoundCloud in early Summer 2021. I had the feeling that I want to come back to this beginnings and set them in a different view after my following processing. So it is also a bit back and forth now -  especially because it contains  this remix of this Ann Clark track from Marc Romboy which has a straight connection to the start of my musical biography in my teens. She was always such an  impressing artist to me with her speech lyrics and actually "Our Darkness" was my hymn from her when I was about 16. I am very greatful I got in touch with such kind of indi stuff in that time - so serious and sad, I really felt that. Some things never change inside. It keeps it real, I guess.

Over the past few years, somewhat mysteriously, Volster has graduallybecome one of the most noted fresh figures of the Croatian electronic scene, leaving his signature through production, DJing, event organisation and, since recently, launching his own vinyl label, Out of Place.
The main subculture Marko was positively exposed to in the 90’s was techno, a style he has been practicing for almost two decades now. As he was performing within and outside the Croatian borders, Volster gradually started experimenting with his sound in the production process that led to signing his early releases with a few smaller foreign record labels. Frequent travelling around Europe and absorbing the music of foreign performers, such as Sandwell District, Mike Parker and Sleeparchive, significantly affected him and his relationship with the similar sound grew even stronger.
After launching Out of Place label, the only logical move was to start publishing his music, making his Nihilist EP label’s first release. What characterises Nihilist EP are harsh and cosmic tangles that vary from hypnotic techno to Detroit inspired electro, which guaranteed noted feedback from a few well-known artists. In addition, this release earned him the biggest recognition for the electronic music in Croatia, by winning the Klubska Scena award for Ambassador of the Year in the Vinyl of the Year category.
Parallel to the new musical chapter of his life, Volster launched TRAUM and Hipertenzija events in his hometown, bringing a new style of techno and club life, characteristic for the majority of Europe, to the local audience. Francois X, Amotik, DJ Deep, Antigone, Etapp Kyle, Paula Temple and Cassegrain are some of the few names that TRAUM hosted so far.
2018 saw a radical turn in his vision as establishing himself as an artist by launching his self-managed imprint, Secession. The first record entitled “The Process of Becoming” was released in December of 2018 featuring remixes from Swedish master of contemporary techno Anthony Linell and talented Berlin based duo Cassegrain. Second release is set for winter 2020.
To this day Volster has performed across the Europe ranging from clubs in Berlin and Budapest to festivals like Dimensions Festival and Modem Festival with his most notable appearance and debut performance in infamous club Berghain - Panorama Bar on September 2019.

@kenneth-christiansen and his @echocord label have long been the guardians of dub techno’s second wave. More than that, the Dane & like-minded friends built their very own techno temple in the form of Copenhagen’s intimate @cultureboxcopenhagen. Kenneth worked there for years as artistic director until he decided to focus on his labels and his own DJ-career and left the venue in 2017. More than a decade after starting his label – and later the Echocord Colour sub-label – there have been more than 100 EPs and LPs that have updated continuously and revisited the techno and dub template and have very much contributed to the careers of those that release on it. Kenneth himself is also an accomplished producer as one half of @pattern-repeat with Dennis Bog (@resoe-baum-records). The pair release on their eponymously entitled label and excel at crafting moody, textured and widescreen techno sounds that draw on years of dub culture. As a DJ, Kenneth has been spinning ever since the beginning of the 90’s, immediately picking up gigs all around Europe because of his unique style and tightly honed sonic vision. Few people manage to remain credible and engaged with the underground over such a long period of time, but thanks to his devotion to his city, sounds and the scene, this man has managed it with ease and is here to stay. When Kenneth is djing his focus is mostly on Dub-Techno, but also he likes to spin the underground, edgy house and Techno. Kenneth is a vinyl DJ.
