Magic 8 with Recreational DJ and special guest, DJ Voices.

DJ Voices is one of my favorite DJs, her mixes are always dynamic, and fun, and packed with surprises. She's also a dedicated steward of NYC's dance scene. DJ Voices holds down a residency and is part of the booking team at Nowadays, frequently hosts open decks sessions, and hosts a book club on her residency nights before the party kicks off.

This one is summer-time, peak-time energy the whole way through, with Recreational DJ on for the first hour and DJ Voices on for the second hour.

If you're tuned in to the New York club scene, you've probably noticed Evelyn's name around more this year, and with good reason. She's been busy laying down exciting sets and tracks all over town. In fact, she just released Tremos b/w Pregunta on Esp Institute on July 28th

The show starts out bassy and breaky, and moves through all kinds of techy and trancey vibes in the second half of the show

Recreational DJ in the mix for the first hour, with sub-120 chuggers. Dark techno and post-punk sounds. Mariposa takes over for the second hour, bringing the bpm way up with drum & bass and dub.

Mariposa is 1/3 of NYC's hottest girl-group, Ladiez Drink Free. She brings bubbly, psychedelic energy with sleek electro, spacey house, sounds you didn't know you liked yet, and more.

Recreational DJ begins the first hour of the show with heavy bass and psychedelic techno. Then wahala.wav takes over the second hour, bringing groovy vibes.

wahala.wav is a fellow 8 Ball Radio host, bringing experimental diasporic sounds to the airwaves on Palm Wine, and is involved in the NYC event and mix series, Slick Down

Magic 8 Episode 106 - 5/4/24

Kfeelz is a member of Misschief Collective, and is a resident of the ever-enduring, The Level Party. She's also the host of Swimming on The Lot Radio. I really dig how, where DJ mixes often put so much emphasis and urgency on the next decision/transition, the pacing and presentation of Swimming asks you to listen with patience. 

That really came through in Kfeelz's mix for this episode. A lovely mix of chilled Saturday afternoon jazz, ambient, and hip-hop, following Recreational DJ's warm-weather house hour.

You'll have a hard time finding anyone more befitting of the nickname, Rave Man, than Akanbi. 

Akanbi is the founder of one of the city's absolute best parties, Groovy Groovy (which is about to celebrate 10 years!), plus the more intimate, Rave Man presents. His style is on another level, one of those DJs that makes me go "how the hell did he think of that?!" and "shit, I need to practice more."

Recreational DJ starts fast and heavy in the first hour, then Akanbi brings the vibesss, a radio masterclass, in the second hour.

ethereal.mvp is behind the controls of Liminal Landscaping on 8 Ball Radio, and is involved with the NYC party collective, grid.nyc.

Recreational DJ kicks off the first hour with some dark psychedelic vibes, drums, and groovy chuggers.

Then ethereal.mvp takes over, picking up the speed with rollicking techno, bass, and breaks.

This episode of Magic 8 celebrates the release of Council's new EP, "Fling," out September 27th on Homage! The record is groovy as hell and features Council's signature cinematic flair.

Council kicks us off this episode with bass and heavy techno grooves. Recreational DJ takes over for the second hour, keeping the vibe psychedelic and fun.

Liquid J is yet another excellent DJ from the rich Miami -> NYC pipeline (where I started doing radio, shoutout WVUM 90.5). Liquid J also produces, hosts Splash! on Newtown Radio, does killer graphic design, and is one of the minds behind Jezebel Sound. 

Recreational DJ kicks the show off with groovy electro and techno. Liquid J holds down the second hour with a tasty mix of techno, bass, garage, and more.

The unifying theme amongst my Magic 8 guests is that they are busy, and GENG PTP certainly fits the bill. He's a community organizer, visual designer, label head, sound engineer, teacher, archivist, DJ, musician, and has been at it in the DIY trenches for a long time.

Recreational DJ kicks it off with an hour of deep bass and techno grooves, with a couple of detours just to keep you on your toes.

GENG PTP takes over the second hour. He says "it’s actually two mixes stitched together that i found on tape earlier this week... documenting not only a time when i was experimenting with analog tech as a means of archiving/back up, but a time that a good few of us have been fondly reminiscing on concurrently by chance/coincidence... bringing that sound back but yea now w tape saturation and hiss (even better).

also it was when i was really starting to dig into a chapter of my own sound design and production."

Recreational DJ eases into the first hour and picks up the pace with bass and techno. sola system takes over for the second hour, keeping the intensity high and the tunes grooving.
