Welcome back to another episode of our podcast series!  What’s happening here? At HRTech 2019, Recruiting Daily teamed up with Talemetry to ask our industry leaders where they think hiring is headed in the next 5 years. We're passing this valuable information on to you by asking each person the same question:

What skills or competencies will we be hiring for in 5 years?

Today, we're here with Mike Grennier, Specialist Master of Human Capital Practice at Deloitte Consulting, as well as Jess Von Bank, Head of Marketing for Leapgen.

Mike's answer to our question is that the primary focus of recruiting used to be engaging with candidates. Now we have so many tools, and as a result, recruiters have gotten lazy. What he sees in the future is a sort of augmented HR Professional that can leverage the available tools combined with candidate engagement.

Jess relates that we get so excited about technology, we forget what it's for. The technology exists to free our time to focus on tasks that only humans can do, like communication and strategy development. We need to remember that technology isn't the only solution and work on enhancing our communication, creativity, and curiosity.

Today, we bring you the thoughts of Shannon Pritchett, Managing Director at CareerXroads and Gerry Crispin, Principal & Co-Founder at CareerXroads. Let's see what they have to say!

      

Shannon foresees that the technology market will continue to implode, and that market will focus more on the gig type economy to solve the talent shortage. She also sees an increase in information security based positions, and of course, healthcare will skyrocket. We agree!

Gerry has two things for us. The children that grew up embedded in technology, using smartphones at age 3, will be entering the workforce. For success, they will need to have a sense of ownership over their career. They have to be able to understand what they want and how a career path leads to something else. To do this, they will have to be able to engage people and find mentors, instead of working tasks on autopilot.

The second thing he sees is a shift from a network into a community. Within a network, you engage based on how you can help each other, but it's missing the component of caring. In a community, you care about their success as much as they care about yours. He is already starting to see this shift in corporations that are talking about more than engagement. The discussion has become treating employees as family, rather than cogs in the machine.

Let's talk about having a high EQ and Grit.

If you haven’t been following along, RecruitingDaily and Talemetry hit the scene at HRTech 2019, asking some of the top industry people their thoughts on future hiring trends. We asked everyone one question:

In our last episode, William spoke with Shannon Pritchett and Gerry Crispin of CareerXroads. Their discussion focused on a needed shift from networking into community. If you missed it, check it out here!

This week, we pose our question to Lisa Guérin Cervenka, Head of Brand, Partnerships & Product at VH Included Consulting, and Jeremy Ames, President & Founder of Hive Tech HR. What do skills do they think will be the most needed in 2025?

Lisa feels that EQ is going to be really important, in terms of being able to run and build a successful and diverse workforce where people feel they belong. Some of this can be learned, but she feels that most of it is intuitive.

She also feels that at the executive level of hiring, it's become too common to hire within their own trusted network. The upcoming challenge will be for executives to hire others outside that circle and push themselves to think about sourcing in a different way.

Jeremy wants to talk about grit. He says that of all the people that he's hired over the years, the successful ones are the ones that are resilient. They are the people that know how to push rather than follow. Education isn't quite as important if you can continuously learn and be multidirectional. It's the people with grit that thrive and also keep pushing you.

The "Big Three"
This right here is a podcast with Brandon Malson from Cloakhire about the power of asking great questions. Why is this important? Ha, see what we did there? That in and of itself is a question! Well, we’ve known about the strategic importance of great questions for a while, with productivity coach Jason Womack even noting it’s one of the biggest differentiators of great leaders and great salespeople -- and, sadly, it’s a skill we seem to see dropping off in many organizations.

Right up top in this podcast, you’ll learn Brandon’s kinda “Big Three” when he approaches a new contact, those being --- >

How did you get into the business?
What are you working on right now that’s new and exciting?
Where do you see current projects evolving over the next 3-5 years?
This is not reinventing the wheel, no. But it is very smart. 

First, people like to talk about themselves, and in an era where we all spend billions on superhero movies, people like to re-imagine their own “origin stories.” That’s Question 1. 

Second, people like to talk about themselves. Did we mention that already? That speaks to Question 2. And third, we all live in a very uncertain (“VUCA”) business time, and we want to steer ourselves by believing we know what’s coming down the pike. 

We’re all futurists! That speaks to Question 3. 

Smart stuff. Go listen.

Problems and solutions
This drives most of sales -- and honestly, a lot of recruiting. One of the interesting things in this podcast -- it happens around the 34-minute mark, give or take -- is a discussion on timing as relates to question-based sales discussions and projects. “Timing” in this context means “Look, if this project is under $40,000, we can do it next month, but if it’s over…” A lot of salespeople are afraid to have transparent pricing discussions (real talk), and that hinders the progress of a lot of these conversations. But reframing it around specific timing as opposed to “Hey, I need this much for quota/project, can you do it now?” is a smarter approach. 

Again, solid stuff. Go give it a listen. 

Boring questions
This is covered a bit, and there’s a future podcast coming with Cloakhire on building rapport -- but this needs to be mentioned here. A lot of people, when they initiate conversations -- be those sales convos, recruiting convos, or networking convos -- are flat-out boring. They lead with “So, what do you do?” and/or canned responses about their industry. Everyone has been in thousands of these conversations. 

They don’t excite us, and thus they don’t move the ball down the field in terms of new opportunities or anything. David Burkus, a management consultant type, actually has a good list of other conversation-starters, all of which are questions:

What excites you right now?
What are you looking forward to?
What’s the best thing that happened to you this year?
Who’s your favorite superhero?
What’s the most important thing I should know about you?
What do you do for fun?
Is there a charitable cause you support?
Notice some of these overlap with Brandon’s Qs. The superhero one might be a bit weird depending on responses, but the rest are pretty solid -- although “What do you do for fun?” can elicit generic responses too. 

Questions drive thinking, and thinking drives good convos, and good convos drive new opportunities. That’s the path. And if you want to double down on how to make all this stuff work, give this podcast a listen.
