Acclaimed Americana artist Eric Brace has done many things in his career -- led roots-rock band Last Train Home for twenty years; was half the Eric Brace & Peter Cooper folk duo for the past ten years; part of the bluegrass supergroup The Skylighters (with Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Gaudreau); Grammy-nominated Childrens' Music producer (2011's "I Love: Tom T. Hall's Songs of Fox Hollow"); creator and co-writer of a musical about the California Gold Rush (2013's "Hangtown Dancehall"). But what he's never done is dig into his own family's musical past. With Cartes Postales, he explores his French roots, performing songs by Charles Trenet, Django Reinhardt, Lucienne Boyer, Yves Montand, and more, in tribute to his French father. With songs from the '20s through 2000, Cartes Postales is an evocative overview of the chansons tradition.
Joined by Rory Hoffman (on every instrument except bass and drums), a sublime (and blind)multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, clarinet, accordion, harmonica, piano, banjo, saxophone, and dozens more instruments better than just about anyone. A true musical genius, Rory brings Parisian flair to the songs, despite growing up in South Dakota.

Eric, Peter, and Thomm have once again combined their forces to create a singular new record, "Riverland," their second as a trio, after the 2017 release, "Profiles in Courage, Frailty, and Discomfort." 

Coming in early 2019 on Eric’s East Nashville-based label Red Beet Records, "Riverland" is fourteen interconnected tales of Mississippi, both the river and the state. Songs about its people, its water, its history, its past, its magic, its madness.

While their first album was just Eric, Peter, and Thomm – nothing but their acoustic guitars and their voices – "Riverland" finds the boys once again working with frequent collaborators Mark Fain (bass) and Lynn Williams (drums), and features significant contributions from the Steeldrivers’ Tammy Rogers (fiddle), banjo players Justin Moses and Terry Baucom, and legendary mandolin player Mike Compton.

Why Mississippi? It’s hard to say exactly, but start with the impact of the river and the state on American life, culture, art, and politics. These boys are a Southerner, a non-Southerner, and an ex-German, but they’re all students of history, of the passage of time, of the forces that shape our culture. They’re aware of the brilliance and fragility of “The American Experiment” especially as it manifests in Mississippi. They share a love of Mark Twain and John Hartford, Faulkner and Willie Morris, the blues and string bands. All of this and much more finds its way into "Riverland."  

Through thirteen new compositions (and one devastating cover), you’ll hear about the Flood of 1927; the adventures of a traveling mule; the twilight years of legendary keelboat man Mike Fink; the farmer fighting to keep his family’s land going; the plan General Ulysses S. Grant’s had to change the world by taking Vicksburg; and you’ll learn about the Reverend Will D. Campbell.
The centerpiece of the record, “Mississippi Madness,” is a song written by the late Rev. Campbell, reflecting on his time working for equality and racial justice in the South over the course of a lifetime (a life that included a deep friendship with songwriter Tom T. Hall, which is reflected in another song on the record, “Tom T. and Brother Will”).  That track includes part of a conversation that Tom T. recorded with Brother Will, discussing the 1962 desegregation of the University of Mississippi.

In this record, you’ll feel the currents of the Big River, and you should just follow your instincts and jump in.

Eric Brace here. It's May, 2020. I made up a song the other day, in the midst of self-isolating in East Nashville. 

Then Thomm Jutz helped make it better. Thomm also gave me some Garageband tips and loaned me a USB microphone to plug into my laptop.

This is what I came up with, and it includes my first recorded guitar solo. (I don't think any of my lead guitarist friends need to lose any sleep about me taking their gig.) Alex McCollough added his mastering mastery to the track and voilà!

Then I wanted to make a video for it, so I went over to Stacie Huckeba's house -- or her street, I should say -- and sat on a stool. We kept our distance and she filmed me strumming and singing the song in the lovely light at the end of an East Nashville day.

It's about... well... you know what it's about. And maybe it's about other things too. Lots of other things.

And yes, there is a boy named Luke who practices trumpet up the block. Sometimes the neighbors bring out lawn chairs to sit and listen to him.

Put your phones down. Take a walk. Listen, look, breathe. But wear a mask.
