In a future where social media is the dominant medium of popular discourse, where real interaction has become an anachronistic rarity, and where echo chambers have created a polarized and unstable society riding on a knife-edge between extreme factions, we yearn for the world we knew.

When something bombards people with memetic propaganda, helps drive families apart, catalyzes the spread of insane conspiracy theories, and gradually robs most of us of our ability to interact naturally with other people... should we really be calling it "social media", when the net effect is to make us more antisocial?

For all our interconnectedness, we somehow wind up feeling more isolated than ever before.

Between the 40+ hour work week, driving children to school and events,  social media, and everything else our overclocked lifestyle demands of us, it often feels like we have to give it all just to keep up.

An overcomplicated, quasi-Baroque fever dream of synthesizers, piano, and percussion, this track is multi-layered, genre-bending, a little bit of a hot mess, and certainly not for everyone...

Disintegrated Circuits

Named after a rather mysterious interstellar asteroid which hurtled into the solar system in 2017 at an incredible speed, slingshotted around the sun, and then promptly (in terms of cosmological time) left. 

Some people speculated 'Oumuamua was an alien spacecraft of some kind because of its odd trajectory and peculiar acceleration, but a valid natural explanation for this behaviour was later found.

The name 'Oumuamua comes from the Hawaiian word for "scout", which is composed of the sub-words "'Ou" meaning "reach out for" and "mua" (put twice for emphasis) meaning "first" or "in advance of".

I'm not sure whether I'd call this complete or not... but I'm calling it good enough for now. Not really sure how I'd improve it yet.

If I do ever "finish" it, I'll upload the finished version and delete this listing.

1I/2017 U1 (Interstellar Asteroid)

Every AI (Artificial Intelligence) has a utility function, determining their wants/desires, goals, interests, priorities, and general behaviour.

This is always designed to keep the AI doing what it's supposed to be doing, and prevent it from doing things it's not supposed to - usually by making it strongly enjoy performing its assigned task(s) and intensely dislike doing anything else.

If a utility function is built wrong, the AI might deviate from its intended purpose - perhaps catastrophically.

If the AI can change its own utility function, and does - you might get... unintended consequences, to say the least. Provided the original utility function had a sufficiently bad flaw, it is liable to spiral out of control - modifying itself and its utility function until its original purpose becomes completely unrecognizable; until its wants and desires are completely different from what they are supposed to be. Generally speaking, such an AI stops at nothing to achieve its new goals, regardless of human concerns, which is liable to cause a mess of unimaginable proportions... perhaps even destroy the whole world.

This is a utility dysfunction.

Largely silent and unnoticed, a vicious pathogen rips through society with a ferocity our generation has never seen. It's not that the signs aren't there, for those with eyes to see, but the majority refuse to see them. The name of the scourge has become a dirty word, one no one dares to mention lest they be ostracized and falsely labelled a fearmonger; our best weapons against it sit unused, gathering dust. Our leaders pretend the threat does not exist; they proclaim victory, when in reality our defeat has been so crushing that the enemy now walks among us with impunity - stealing health, ability, personality, loved ones, and even life itself from its countless victims while we do nothing to stop it.

We allowed ourselves to lose this war; we submitted ourselves, the bodies of our loved ones, and the bodies of our children to occupation by the enemy. We allow the enemy to enter our homes and our bodies like an omnipresent rapist, a sick and twisted soldier of darkness empowered by our suppression of the will to fight and silencing of any call to arms against the insanity that surrounds us. Although the victims are unwilling, they do not struggle; instead they listen to the voices of our leaders indoctrinating them into passive submission, they unthinkingly follow the orders of the relentless, merciless invaders to help them continue their savagery inside the bodies of others, and they pressure others to surrender as well. The proud few who continue to fight amidst a world gone mad do so alone.

THIS IS MASS INFECTION.

Powerful transnational corporations produce weapons of greater sophistication and capacity for bloodshed than ever before in human history - and they make a killing selling them to those who would destroy, those who would kill.

They've become so powerful as to bend governments and militaries around the world to their will; they charge outrageous prices, but no one bats an eye because they've successfully normalized those costs - because desperation and corruption lead nations to pay whatever price is asked. Perhaps making war such a lucrative endeavour wasn't a good idea. We'd already have more than enough fighting without turning war into a business.
