Do we have something for you here. The finest in drum & bass, fresh from Redlight, the label from the one and only Optiv. Always known for bringing some amazing talent through, the C4C man has done it again, this time with Zero Method, out of Hungary.

Zero Method’s releases, on labels like Subtitles, Disturbed and DCS14, have been supported by Ed Rush, Trace, Teebee as well as Cause 4 Concern and more. From his roots on online radio, Zero Method has come up through the ranks, taking his influences and moulding his very own minimal, expressive style. His effective, simple and clean arrangements have been met with appreciation all across the scene, and he now returns to Redlight for the Groundbreaker EP.

The title track leads things off, and it’s immediately obvious why he’s gathered so much acclaim over the last few years. The track explodes out of the blocks, leading with a gritty, grimey, underground feel. The drums are precise, the bass burning, and it doesn’t take long for the spirit and feeling of Zero Method’s music to take hold. The huge Mechatron is ruggedly cinematic, and would not be out of place in a remake of Blade Runner or the like. The drop is truly out of this world, after which ZM leads you down some very dark sonic alleys, returning to the surface with a lift later on. Very, very special.

Closer Cold War has been given the Optiv remix treatment, and together, they have come together on something with all the hallmarks of a classic. The urgent, colliding beats are matched with an undertow the likes of which we’ve not heard since classic Dillinja. The track *makes* you get up on the floor, leaving nothing behind and nothing to chance. You’ll be banging your head against a very hard wall in no time with this one.

The return of Program has been eagerly awaited. One of the most defining sister-labels that has cemented a name for itself against its colossal counterpart,

Program’s hiatus has led to the secret expansion of its discography. One that’s about to be unleashed on the masses, after biding its time. And Aggressor Bunx deliver a four-track EP to reinstate both their name and the imprint’s… The producers have withstood the baying competition of new recruits to become a household name in their own right.

Reintroducing you to the gritty, no-apologies assault of Program’s output, up first is title-track ‘Colony’. Creepy, horror-like samples intertwine with boding snare, dragging you forward on top of steely drums. You’re given a brief moment of respite before you crash inside another unfamiliar break pattern, a feature Aggressor Bunx are renowned for.

‘Dizballance’ and ‘Time Shift’ roll out next. ‘Dizballance’ takes you down a techier route, with elevating note patterns and a madly fluctuating bassline, made stockier by pumping subs. Kick-drum bolsters the composition, creating a seemingly intricate but no less heavy fresh piece of sonic artwork.

On the other hand, ‘Time Shift’ offers up a different take on their signature production standards. Riding along a more ethereal intro, you’re opened to a deeper version of their repertoire. Ragga vocal snips drop you into distorted anarchy, amongst clinking hi-hats and wavering synth. It’s murkier than its predecessors, gradually building with each segment.

And lastly, comes ‘Hottah’. Each layer grows more and more indignant, filled with cascading drops and peddled drums ricocheting throughout the mix. It serves as the perfect finish, yet again demonstrating a commitment to a dark, fiercely intimate craftsmanship which has made the producer so notorious.
