The savage, kaleidoscopic improvisations of the quintet's previous two volumes instantly gained reverence among fans of free flowing krautrock and detuned stoner rock, and this brand new addition, recorded in the late summer of 2013, fullfills the group's potential entirely. The krautrock grooves, the low-end heavyness and the sprawling furor is still very much present - but this set is also permeated by a rare free jazz-sensibility, at times recalling American masters of improvisation such as John Coltrane and Don Cherry in spirit.

Ferociously experimental, yet absolutely welcoming and corporal. One eye looking back to the golden age of improvised music, the other looking straight ahead, into the future. ”Incipiency Suite”, which takes up the entire B-side of this record, stands as the high pinnacle of what this group is capable of with the inclusion of Ron Schneiderman: an afternoon of spontaniously recorded parts, cut-and-pasted into an abundant whole by studio wiz Jonas Munk, creating a unique interplay between in-the-moment improvisation and creative studio editing."

The progressive version of Open Sky is ultimately about the dissolution of fear and the discovery that creativity survives every technological shift. The narrator begins in a defensive stance, guarding the boundaries of what music is supposed to be, but over the course of the song they realise that the “machine” was never a threat—it was simply another pathway to expression. The lyrics reflect the tension between old and new worlds, between tradition and experimentation, where the self evolves by embracing multiple forms of artistry. The chorus becomes a statement that the real question was never whether a sound was “real,” but whether it could transform or move us. By the end, the musician accepts the hybrid identity: not replacing human creativity, but expanding it. The song becomes an anthem for the idea that ten years from now, music will not be measured by its tools or origins, but by the emotional truth it carries.

This here is the (official) bio for Do It Better Again – the second full-length from GONZO. GONZO are a rock band. Gonzo are from Melbourne via Geelong. Do it Better Again is out on long playing vinyl through Anti Fade Records from March 29. 

GONZO met and formed in the sunny seaside town of Ocean Grove where they all happened to live on the same street. This must have been around 2014 while finishing high school. It was the best of times. 

This is the follow up to their debut album, Gonzo by Gonzo. This record is better. 
Do It Better Again was recorded over three days in a Castlemaine stable that was built in 1857, when things were built better. It was recorded and mixed entirely using analogue gear, so it feels better. The first time it touched a computer was in the hot hands of Mikey Young for mastering, so it sounds better too. 

GONZO aren't punk, indie, shoe-gaze, psych, whatever. GONZO are a rock band. And a real one. GONZO reference classic rock sounds like The Saints, The Victims, Gang of Four, and the Easybeats alongside modern sounds of Thee Oh Sees, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Uranium Club. See for yourself. 

Do it Better Again is out Friday March 29th on Anti Fade Records.
