An Orchestral Study in Aquamarine (Excerpt)

About two years ago, I went with some friends to a town in the middle of nowhere to watch a performance of an avant-garde contemporary classical piece called "All's Grist That Comes to the Mill" by composer Erik Griswold. While we were out there, I managed to record a quick snippet of the piece on my Zoom H1n, which for years sat untouched on a hard drive. I rediscovered it about a month ago, and as a joke turned a small snippet of it into a house track, which is the soundworld this piece starts in. When I showed what I had done to a friend of mine, despite it being a joke, she told me that she thought, actually, that "[it] fucking slap[ped]".

So, here we are.

What was meant to be a quick joke for fun is now a 20-minute Breakbeat jungle/deep house mix. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

The first half of 2023 has been pretty intense. I've moved house, quit jobs, been under enormous amounts of stress and pressure, and lost contact with some pretty important people to me.

It finally feels like I am settling in and actually excited about things to come, but I can't move on fully just yet. In order for that to happen, there are a few tracks I need to release that I am very proud of, but can't really fit into my future plans for one reason or another.

So, without further ado, here they are.

Made a big chonky boi ambient mix of an orchestral piece I wrote back in third year.

This track was made kind of improvisatorily. I discovered the main texture while working on a different track, and thought the overall sound was super atmospheric, so I put it in a new Ableton set, threw some effects over it (mostly three phase EQ), and automated bits of it at random.

I think it's a fun experiment in texture, personally.

Tidsguiden (wɪljəm smɪθ) is a composer, producer, and visual artist based on the Sunshine Coast, Australia in stolen Gubbi Gubbi country. Their work combines the electronic world of synthesisers and DAWs with the human world of drawing and animation. Together, in conjunction, the listener is transported to worlds of intense feelings and subtle truths.

Working across a range of styles, their work is diverse spanning multiple genres. Their output includes sound design and music on LJ Project's award-winning short film "Endless", arrangements of original work for wind ensemble and orchestra, as well as various chamber works and graphic scores performed locally and internationally. Their art has been displayed in local galleries, in exhibitions run as part of Meanjin's underground art scene.

It is said that, one day, Tidsguiden will escape their extra-physical bonds beyond the veils of materiality, and they will spew forth into this world, our own. On that day, we will be rendered as colourful snakes, and in crude lines. Our movements will jump and skip as if they cannot be contained within our plane of reality. Until that day of terror, however, all we know we can do is enjoy every day.
