On a mild mid-summer morning in January 2022, I’d ventured out for a hike to the Deep Creek Waterfall, located deep in the valleys below the Tapanappa region of the park. The walking track is part of the much, much longer Heysen Trail, and a good five kilometres of tramping will take you from the Tapanappa lookout to the waterfall. 

Since it was the middle of summer, I was uncertain if there would be a cascade at the falls, so I opted instead in favour of a longer recording, with my ambisonic recorder deployed in a small tree at the mid-point of the hike to document the fairly discrete ambience of this lower valley region. I collected the recorder on my way back from the falls.

Although the original recording was one-and-a-half hours in duration, I’ve abbreviated this to a 12-minute excerpts which embodies some of the most interesting qualities of this soundscape, including the quiet hush of the dense bush and occasional song of birds.

A footnote: in spite of it being a relatively dry mid-summer, the waterfall was indeed cascading beautifully. Next time around - regardless of the season - I’ll be taking my recorder all the way to the intended destination. 

A future note to myself: make sure to carry more than one recorder on these trips. One for the intended destination; the other for mid-points or similar.

Program Note
Tagundnachtgleiche (Equinox) was created on the occasion of a composition competition for brass quintets announced by the publishing house Furore Verlag in 2017.
At the beginning of 2023, I decided to record the piece in a recording studio and to make it available to the public. The trumpeter Bernhard Plagg was kind enough to take on the project. He put together a brass quintet, organised rehearsal dates, etc.
The composition consists of two elements that alternate or interpenetrate each other. On the one hand, composed, notated music, harmonic and rhythmic in the broadest sense. And on the other, improvised music, mainly consisting of differentiated, nuanced noises and representing a kind of random music, like random sounds in nature.

Have you ever looked up at a star, seeing it flicker colorfully, vividly inspiring you with an image? I definitely know I did: The first time it happened when I was quite small, exploring every phenomenon around me - I took a good look at a star and because of the possible nebula hiding its full spark, making it flicker, I thought to myself: "These may not be mere stars, but perhaps some fancy space bars" As their light was never the same color, but ranging from yellow to red, blue and even violet.
That mood stuck with me ever since - I wonder if one day, one dream I would see that place in outer space I ever wanted to embrace.

This tune improvisation is a homage to that memory - a blend of nostalgia and need to be with the cosmic buddies from the bar that no one on earth have ever been to before.

There's so little information about this amazing renga poet that I decided to share another poem written by him. This one is part of a longer sequence, written in 1463:

Only the moon remains
floating in the memory upon
Kinokawa River—
pale glistening waves,
the blank wake of drowned men.
 
About this poem, the author said: "Among the hundreds and thousands who have drowned and perished in this river
due to the disorders in this province were those whom I knew in former days. Often
I would walk along the river, gazing at the moon."

Shinkei (1406-75) was a renowned renga poet and critic, best known for his two-part work "Sasamegoto" (Murmured Conversations). Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).
