Red Axes make a triumphant return to Phantasy with a further trio of expertly-crafted leftfield club tracks. Having produced several of the label’s best-loved club moments such as ‘Sipoor’ and ‘Sound Test’, the Israeli duo easily surpass their charismatic reputation across ‘Some Lights’.

‘Some Lights’ stomps forward to reveal the footprints of a rave giant, yet, even Red Axes at their most anthemic unfold the unexpected. Bleary-eyed chords stretch wistfully into the far-distance, as a male voice compounds the mood; “Sunrise”. Suddenly, the Axes pull the rug and reveal the howling club wolf hidden behind the sheep’s dress code, plunging dancers into a heavy trip of vintage rave chords and EBM-drum play.

The more psychedelically inclined will meanwhile find plenty to embrace in the wide, kaleidoscopic canyons of ‘Skulls’, a deeper-still groove machine that conjures up images of untamed sonic plains, Morricone-esque chords unexpectedly synthesised with psychobilin. Finally, ‘Professor Grasstov’ finds the duo loosening up into more playful form still, dragging the good name of this notable academic on a loose, breaks'y trip full of baggy energy (and complete with audible liquid experiments).

""Kate Pending - Pigmented Reality," slated for release on Friday, May 3, 2024, marks the first full length release from enigmatic artist Kate Pending. A carefully crafted 12-track record, this album is an eloquent expression of her polished sound and artistic versatility.

The album's palette can be likened to an eclectic blend of influences, from ethereal vibes similar to Elder Island and Little Dragon to deeper electronic tones like Christian Löffler and Jacob Groening. There are many parallels that can be drawn with Kate's sound, which in essence speaks to the level of electronic sophistication the package offers. Whilst some tracks bring an element of edgy, synth-driven energy, others take a more progressive or laid back route creating a fusion of genres that Kate Pending navigates with finesse.

"Pigmented Reality" starts with "Lost Ways," a track that sets the tone with spoken word over ever evolving sequences, an introduction that leads directly into "Soma Sequence," where rhythmic complexities meet the same sequenced arpeggio and mutate into something altogether different. Next up "Futile Resistance" has an altogether more ominous tone, but still retaining a melodic flourish. Starting with an almost Micro-House aesthetic, which then transforms into more.

The title track, "Pigmented Reality," stands as the album's centrepiece, showcasing Kate's ability to weave intricate soundscapes with emotional depth. "Retro Island" delves into a more nostalgic House realm, offering a nod to retro synths and rhythms, whilst keeping a trademark sheen. Tracks like "Dark Fields" drop the 4x4 for elegant breaks and a vocal performance that draws you in. "Status Quo" and "Punk Kids" inject a different, rebellious energy to the record but in very different ways, epitomising the electronic pop influences on the record.

Throughout "Pigmented Reality," Kate Pending demonstrates her mastery over the medium. Making full use of the long form album format. Each track is a careful movement in a different musical direction, blending more organic and synthesized sounds to create a rich, thematic experience. With "Onyx Skies" we get a more bass drum dominated sound, that underlines Kate's fundamentally danceable sound whilst "Dystopian Dreams" veers into deeper House territory. The album's conclusion begins with "After Hours" - the most dancefloor focused cut on the record, and "Waiting Game" which takes its foot off the gas so you can reflect on the journey you have just experienced.

Joining Kate for this record we have 2 remixers. Berlin based Iron Curtis provides two Electro tinged breaks reworks of "Pigmented Reality", featuring the stripped back maximalist sound we come to expect from him. VOID LOOP ( ) also come correct with a tastefully flipped version of "Status Quo". Pulling the original into a more 4x4 template but with a carefully crafted eccentric groove. Overall the variety of this package is its main strength, offering different ideas and vibes whilst keeping it all tied together."

Hot on the heels of their celebrated album Beach Goths and after offering-up Paratrooper as part of DJ Tennis’ recent DJ-Kicks, Israeli genre-defying duo Red Axes arrive on Life and Death with an original EP.

Sami is a post-Moondog shamanic tribal trip, while Round combines dilapidated future Goa electronics with just the right amount of cowbell and guitar psych. Vego Gam is lo-fi Spaghetti Western, full of tape delay and amplifier sauce, while Pulse waves and wind chimes ring Russian bells on the title track, Kalacol - a mind-melding dancefloor gem.

A record that could only come from Niv and Dori - another reconfiguration of the Life and Death mausoleum.

Already a well-established presence on the outlandish fringes of experimental, alternative and dance music, celebrated Israeli duo Red Axes make a surprise left-turn onto Phantasy with a three-track 12”, ‘Sipoor’. Unsurprisingly, the results are as pleasingly out-there as the occasion requires. 

Following on from last year’s self-released LP, ‘The Beach Goths’, ‘Sipoor’ immediately announces the Axes’ uncompromising return to the front and centre of the dancefloor with the raw, provocative ‘Bad Time Story’. Brazen, brash acid triggers this particular tale, as Red Axes briskly modulate their way through a ruff, tuff but never less than musical landscape of 303s and 808s. 

‘Sipoor’ takes a more gradual approach to building offbeat rave tension, featuring an unknown male using his native tongue to request some kind of house, some kind of techno and some sort of release. His wish (and we hope, yours) is the Axes’ command, as the music goes deep before seamlessly unfolds around a throbbing bassline and a playful, familiar keyboard sample, beckoning feet to the dancefloor and perhaps tongues ever so slightly to cheeks. 

Concluding the 12”, ‘Teroof’ takes each of Red Axes’ signature ingredients - deeply rhythmic EBM-inspired drums, spiralling electronics, unapologetically odd vocal distortions - and reconstructs them amid what sounds like the Monaco Grand Prix, as high-velocity motors speed past the soundscape, kicking up some serious dust.

Following their hugely well-received, refreshingly outlandish debut EP for Phantasy, Israeli club outsiders Red Axes return to the label with another three-track delight of leftfield dance entitled ‘Sound Test’.

Debuting on Phantasy in 2018, ‘Sipoor’ by Red Axes was massive. The release received critical acclaim, not to mention heavy support within the club realm from DJs like Call Super, Jennifer Cardini, Ewan Pearson, Fort Romeau, Massimiliano Pagliara, Chloe, and many more.

Highly soughtafter by those who’ve heard Erol Alkan unleash it in recent months, ‘Sound Test’ kickstarts Phantasy Sound’s 2019 - a rolling tool for a dance floor sliding into another dimension, constructed around a dramatic, numeric countdown. A minimal, skeletal build builds (and builds!) throughout to one of the most out-there breakdowns in recent rave-blotted memory, as the Axes slowly but surely rebuild their house to even more outlandish new proportions. Ten, nine, eight, seven...

‘Shabak Shalom’ quickly snatches the record back from outer space and drags it deep into the basement, zoning in on the gritter, strobe-ready sound that defines the duo’s most club-ready work. All of the Axes’ weapons of choice are deployed as unusually as per usual; militant drums, battered electronics, fucked- frequencies, wiry post-punk guitar lines and lovingly drowned traditional instruments blend to create their own special, slightly-menacing interpretation of hi-NRG.

Finally, on the unapologetically sprawling and immediately effective closing number, ‘Kookoo Papa’, Red Axes demonstrate their inherent talent, if proof were ever needed, of conjuring rolling, simmering tension in otherworldly shades. Those who enjoyed the cartoonish motor FX of ‘Teroof’ will be delighted to find themselves found into an even wackier race this time round, hitting on the origins of Chicago jack, acid meltdowns and screeching no-wave.

Âme’s Frank Wiedemann calls up friends and family for remix duties on 9 tracks from the back catalogue of his eclectic label, Bigamo Musik, reaching for some of the most respected names in electronic music to dig into the archives.

The first 3 tracks form the first of a trio of remix EP's, with Red Axes, Sado V and Dengue Dengue Dengue taking their talents to tracks from Keope and Abrão.

Tel Aviv power pair Red Axes are no stranger to Abrão’s work, with the latter’s vocals featuring on their 2014 release ‘Kicks Out of You’. The familiarity shows itself in the Israeli duo’s careful rearranging of “Aguas sagradas do Ganges” into a sundowner-set beauty, opening the track up to the dancefloor whilst preserving the original’s measured approach and plaintive vocals.
