It's been 10 years since the birth of Music Is My Sanctuary, and what a 10 years it’s been! Started in 2007 by Alexis Charpentier aka DJ Lexis in Montreal, Canada, Music Is My Sanctuary has been dedicated to discovering and presenting music often overlooked by mainstream music channels through articles, interviews, radio shows, DJ mixes, and events. 

The "10th Anniversary Compilation: Never Stop Digging" is an eclectic collection featuring 17 unreleased tracks from artists who all share the same vision and passion, and who represent the mentality and styles that Music Is My Sanctuary works to push forward. 

Side A focuses on some more floor-oriented grooves from artists who are known for both producing and DJing. Side B (kicked off by the ever-mysterious Clutchy Hopkins) is dedicated to the Hip Hop and Funk heads featuring artists who have all put their own unique spin on genres that have come before. Consider this a Future Classics affair! 

This project is a collaboration with 101 Apparel, who are providing the "Never Stop Digging" T-shirts which can be purchased from 101 Apparel directly. Both the T-shirt and cassette were designed by Montreal's Nik Brovkin. The official Music Is My Sanctuary 10th Anniversary celebration was held at Montreal’s Centre Phi, promoted and broadcasted live by Boiler Room. A big thank you goes out to the artists who provided tracks for this compilation, and to all artists who keep creating such fantastic music for us to share and enjoy. Without you there would be no us, and for this we can’t thank you enough!

Gilles Peterson presents: Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba! The Podcast. This 30 minute podcast is to accompany the release of the new album, Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba on Brownswood Recordings. The podcast  includes insight from Jigüe, Nino Fony and El Individuo and Laura Catana who manages Guampara Production company in Havana, Cuba. 

Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba! showcases an extended network of like-minded, forward-thinking musicians driving Cuba’s music forward. Following repeated trips to connect with venues, collectives and DJs, Peterson and Will LV – one half of LV, who’ve released on Hyperdub and Keysound amongst others – linked up with DJ Jigüe, a much-respected producer and DJ, whose Guámpara label has charted new directions for Cuban music. He’s been profiled by The Fader and Vice, and the album features his extended network of collaborators, connecting Afro-Cuban traditions with contemporary movements and ideas.

For the fourth release in my series of free downloadable mixes, I’ve linked up with the versatile and talented DJ Mza (DP Sound / Turntable Addicts / Soul Circle Radio) to produce “The B-Boy Uprock Mix,” an ambitious, gritty mix of rock, hip hop and electronica.  Songs from seemingly disparate genres are fused together with heavy metal guitar riffs and nasty breakbeats.  Simply put, we wanted to put the violence back in dance music.  It’s a short, tight set that we’re hoping you’ll want to rock out to again and again... whether it be in the mosh pit or the b-boy circle.

“Semilla” is a collaborative album by multi-instrumentalist Pachakuti and producer young.vishnu. Pachakuti is a classical trained saxophonist and pianist with strong leanings towards jazz and latin music. young.vishnu is a beatmaker, arranger, sampleologist and the founder of the Nima Composition Archive. They both met briefly five years ago in Hildesheim and became friends on a road trip to the bask country. Pachakuti and young.vishnu formed a nine-piece band called the Soularkestra which became the nucleus of their new project.

With “Semilla” the duo is dipping deep into hip-hop, jazz, latin, funk and soul with strong messages about politics, identity, globalization and neocolonialism.

Semilla means seed, means birth, 
means life, means opportunity. 
Opportunity of roots, of growth, 
of creativity, of expression. 
Expression of the sacred, 
of abundance, of eternity. 
Eternity of seeds, of flowers, 
of fruit, of death, of rebirth. 
Rebirth of lineages, of purpose, 
of knowledge, of truth. 

young.vishnu is still living in Hildesheim. Pachakuti moved to Berlin a couple of years ago and is also part of the Douniah & High John live band.
