Elpis Mode

Listen to the birds from "A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean”, the second Volume in the series following on from "A Guide to the Birdsong of South America", originally released on Robin's label Rhythm and Roots. Volume I raised nearly 15,000 USD for two birding organisations and featured artists like Nicola Cruz, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Chancha Via Circuito.

For this second edition we have shifted focus north of the equator and to the vulnerability of bird species like the Momoto Carenado (Nicaragua), Ferminia (Cuba) and the Jamaican Blackbird (Jamaica), birds who have dwindled in numbers as a result of the environmental repercussions of climate change, deforestation and trapping for the pet trade.

For the album we chose 10 endangered or threatened bird species and challenged 10 of our favourite producers or musicians from the region. Working with the Xeno Canto birdsong community and the Macaulay Library, we sourced a recording of each bird’s song. Each artist was then asked to create an original piece of music inspired by the bird and its song.

In line with out vision at Shika Shika the curation of artists is specifically geared towards those bridging connections between traditional music and modernity, or between organic and electronic sounds. There are contributions from artists in eight different countries, ranging from Jamaica’s organic dancehall trio Equiknoxx, to Dj Jigüe, one of the leaders of Cuba’s burgeoning electronic scene. Belize’s critically renowned Garifuna Collective have been bringing the unique Garifuna culture and language to a global audience for many years, while Tamara Montenegro has been one of the leaders of Nicaragua’s electronic music scene for the past decade.

The project would not have been possible without the support of an incredible Kickstarter community, helping us raise £12,599 in August 2019.

Once the costs of production have been covered, all of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Birds Caribbean, La Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica and Fundacion TXORI in Mexico. All profits from the sales of the record, music streaming, poster and t-shirt will be shared between these organisations who focus on engaging local communities to help improve and grow the bird tourism sector, create awareness of vulnerable birds with young people and crucially, provide rescue, rehabilitation and breeding programmes.

My musical journey at Dauga Spirit gathering started when the sun was almost descending from its daytime peak. During the afternoon, some sounds emerge; hearing it will take you on a journey. It began with intro beats of enjoyable vocals that moved along with the sun when it moved from the centre of the sky to deep and energetic electronic, organic, ethnic vibes in the south of Semigallia.

Mindspring Music presents: Garden Of Symbiosis, an eclectic mix of beautiful tracks, compiled by Entangled Mind. The push and pull between waking life and the dream world come to life in this beautifully compiled release with a mixture of psychedelic vibes physically intertwined with a touch of broken beats, jazzy vibes, world-ethnic rhythms and chillout, holding together the symbiotic nature of reality and the dream world.

From the depths of fertile psychedelic soil springs forth a delectable sonic adventure. Step into the Garden of Symbiosis as we explore and experience the array of sounds.

At the gateway of our garden, we have Arcturus setting the mood with the funky melodic tune Tossing Pebbles, a perfect anthem for stirring up the serene waters of a pond, awaiting what happens next.

Things get even more mysterious as Darklord Gob hits us with a funky, squishy tune called Callisto, setting a nice dubby foundation of mystery and intrigue as we head deeper into the garden.

Continuing our journey through the dubby end of the garden, the beauty of our sonic surroundings come alive as we sway gently along to the magic of the uplifting, earthy, positive vibes of Panda On The Bamboo Tree's joint called Hickey Hipster Dub. 

Picking up our pace a bit, we find ourselves paying close attention to our surroundings and we skip playfully though DeathMomenT' Current Understanding, an ethno-conscious downtempo tune that is symbiotically mysterious and uplifting. 

Stepping off the path into a shaded canopy of large trees, we are suddenly surrounded with a buzzing flurry of wildlife, frolicking about in a frantic manner. Gleekch provides us the perfect backdrop to the scene with Can not wake up that early, a frantic progressive tune with a shift in energy that peaks with some funky drum'n'bass. 

The spectacular display of frenzied energy is concluded just as fast as it began and the discovery of a serene pond is just what we need to recuperate and reflect. Øhmar provides us with a much needed groovy chillout tune, Above Duality, to help us relax and catch our breath.

Off on the distance we hear the ever-increasing beckoning of Arcturus' return to the garden. This time, teaming up with Faelow, we give in to the intriguing sounds of Viridus, a melodic, groovy chillout tune.

Feeling quite refreshed, we depart from Arcturus and Faelow and meet up with Slaycub who inspires us to make a run for it, to take all that we have felt in the garden and move forward with the positive intention of integration. Epigenesis is an uplifting and beautiful backdrop to inspire us to do just that.

Catching our breath, in the distance, we see the exit of the garden. Our journey, though coming to a close, settles with a symbiotic merging of our waking life and reality. Vallou provides us with the perfect soundtrack as we depart from the Garden of Symbiosis, in balance with our new reality.
