Abraham, as the first disciple, worships by building an altar. But there's more going on here than piling up stones. Abraham worships the Lord by waging war on the gods of the land he arrived in. Abraham, enters Egypt to save his family. But he is so afraid for his life that he gives his wife to the Pharaoh! The wife who was to bear a son that God promised would bless all the nations! Not the stereotypical picture of father Abraham. But we have fear too. What can we learn from this man of faith about our own fear?

Abraham, is learning very quickly that his new God would not tolerate his old ways of worshiping the moon god. He used to pay tribute to the moon god but in this passage we see Abraham now gives to the LORD because he wants everyone to know that he no longer worships the moon god, he worships the Most High. When we give sacrificially we remind ourselves where our true allegiance is. Who do you worship? You can find out if you look at your bank statement.

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah come at a unique time in the history of Israel. After spending the last 70 years in exile the King of Persia orders for the temple of God to be rebuilt. This return is a part of God's plan that he prophesied in Jeremiah that after 70 years he would once again gather his people and bring them home. But the reality is that only a few of the exiles return, while most choose to stay in Babylon. What is God doing during this time? What is he trying to teach his people as they return home to rebuild their devastated land?
