In Dec 2016, I found a compilation of Iraqi and Syrian folk music which blew me away. Featured heavily in this music is a drum called the khishba, aka a Zanbor, which means wasp in Arabic. It sounds like a machine gun. This fascinated me, not only because the drum sounded dope, but because I think art reflects and shapes society. I don't think it's a coincidence that a region that has experienced such turmoil has a drum like this embedded in its folk culture. In the liner notes of this comp were some moving stories about some of the artists who had been tragically effected by events in the region. These heart breaking stories, combined with the refugee crisis, compelled me to make music every day for a couple of weeks focusing on these feelings and ideas. I didn't think too much or edit any of it. I played on the wasp idea with buzzing synths and manipulated the khisbha into various sounds. The result was this record.

It's been nearly a year since I made it. I wanted it out at the start of this year, and had a label lined up, but for various reasons this didn't happen. I'm glad it didn't. Because a friend and colleague, Abdullah Al-wali, who helps with Customs, the label we set up to release SSB, got involved, not only to release the record, but to make the accompanying video. Abdullah was born in Iraq and the project resonated with him. He sent a video for the first few tracks and I loved it. I starting helping him find footage for the rest of the record, and the piece came together quickly.

To launch the record (and now film), I had originally wanted to put on a fundraiser for displaced people from the region, featuring relevant artists and... food! Last week we did this in a humble DIY way in a small space in London. We screened the video, and also exhibited photography from the region (the cover of the record is from war photographer Susannah George who has been in the region for years), and Abdullah and I made some food! I'd never put on an event like this and I was proud, especially because we raised money for the Amar Foundation. I want to thank Abdullah because none of this would have happened without him.

It's the first of several new releases from Redinho - an Englishborn, one time Californian living, multi talented badman. We hope you are as excited as we are about it.

Built of sterner stuff than you might expect, Redinho’s musical palette morphs and fractures with every new production. Born and raised on funk, Redinho is as much a product of the 80s as he is the current dance music climate. He makes music with unabashed passion, whether he’s micro organising his shuffling hi hats or zoning out on his talkbox.

I've tried to make this record as much a moment in time as possible, aiming to make a beat a day in December 2016 and resisting urges to edit. This was to avoid analysis paralysis, perfectionism, and give it a punk feel.
 
I also wanted the record to sound lo fi, as if it’s a dusty artifact found in the rubble. Much of the sounds were run through a space echo emulator and this gave it an atmosphere that felt relevant.
