Can you dig it? Kayne certainly can.

“The theme of this mix is a certain new age sound and flavor from 80s recordings. I traced this sound through the work of many Japanese artists (hence the Shibas on the cover) and I would say this became the backbone of the mix: music by the legendary Haruomi Hosono, Yuji Toriyama and many more. The vibe is unique and experimental, a new age-y, jazz-rock-y type of deal. I’ve been quite inspired for a long time by the character and creativity of this era; something about the guitar and instrumentation gives it that special touch. Personally, as a producer, I’m a big fan of Yamaha instruments, in particular the DX7, which I’ve come to associate with this time in music. Though Japanese artists are the central thread, I’ve made a kind of fusion of many different things that to me capture this special flavor.”

I just found this one in a folder called Mixes By Yours Truly. Recording date 05.07.2010. Intrigued as I don't remember anything about it. Have I recorded this for anyone out there? Is it on Mixcloud? Is it named after the opening track by Liliental? Finally an answer!

This month's show is a fertile mix of obscure jazz, folk, rock and vernacular music put together by Vancouver based collector and producer Nate Drobner who operates under the alias Astrological and the duo Potatoehead People. He also pilots a fantastic Youtube channel called MoogMelodiya where he uploads the many amazing discoveries he finds primarily at local thrift shops. I’ve been looking forward to having Nate make a mix for the show for a while, and he delivered!

Marco Gegenheimer and Daniel Baughman started Magic Teapot along with Jens Ingelstedt in 2017, relentlessly searching for hidden sounds from all over the world, paired with nutty video snippets through their Instagram account. Currently they have stopped as a record shop (due to lack of time), as they’re both busy with individual projects. Daniel is A&R at Hivern Discs and a booker at Barcelona's newest Audiophile listening bar, Nica. Marco is nowadays focusing on MLiR’s debut album and has several EP’s lined up this year on Studio Barnhus and Local Talk, to mention a few. In a near future, Magic Teapot Records will become a record label, but until then you can catch them playing at Dekmantel Selectors on the 23rd of August. Dani and Marco recorded this mix exploring breezing new age, magic downtempo, amateurish boogie and experimental disco. A phenomenal journey!
