Discovering his undying love for poetry and music as a young teen, Maryland-based rapper Steven Barth (born August 7th, 1992), better known by his stage name RedLock, is a unique, up and coming hip-hop artist raised in Severna Park, Maryland. Being heavily influenced by the 90’s hip-hop culture, he’s crafted his unique rhyme style from the likes of artists such as Big L, Nas, Styles P, Lauryn Hill, Kool G Rap, Gangstarr, and many others.

In 2011, without the help of promoters or management, he paved his way into the hip-hop community by releasing his first two mixtapes, “Strange Culture” and “Seeing Red”. Although “Strange Culture” can be found and downloaded on Datpiff.com, “Seeing Red” was only made available as a hard copy and only 100 copies of the tape were printed for distribution. For RedLock, poetry and songwriting have not only been a hobby and passion of his but more so a means to deal with what he calls his “extreme, yet unoften, states of depression”.

Although depression isn’t a major roadblock in his life, as he’s become more of an optimist over the years, it has been the cause for some of his most heart-felt work. Upon listening to his first two mixtapes and recently released singles, I found that a large portion of his music involved lyrics speaking heavily of depression, fighting drug addiction, and a few other semi-negative topics. However, despite his on-going list of “sad songs”, he also offers a much more positive side of his personality.

Within the past year RedLock has released numerous singles, which can be found on his Soundcloud (www.soundcloud.com/redlockofficial) and on his Youtube account (www.youtube.com/redlockofficial). His most recent work is his music video for his new single “Just Watch” which was shot, edited, and directed by Chad Butler. The video was released on May 10th 2014 as his own rendition of the song “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” from two more of his major influences, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth.

Aside from the number of singles he has put out over the past year, he is currently working on his biggest project yet, entitled “Prevent My Fall”. It’s undeniable that he's progressed an incredible amount from the time he released his first projects in 2011, and that will be very obvious upon this June release. If you’re one to keep up with upcoming artists, expect to see this guys name pop up a lot in the near future.
