Yogi Bhajan taught this is ancient yogic mantra as a tool to relate instantly to the divine teacher within. Adi means primal or first.  In Kundalini yoga, this is the first mantra that should be used for any yogic or meditative practice.   It is used to tune in before Kundalini Yoga classes, to center us in the higher self, and to spiritually guide both the teacher and the students during the class.

I was asked by an Australian artist going by the name of 'Sugar Puss' to collaborate and so I asked her to send me this song which I then loaded into Logic and played my Bison horn flute over it. I had recently got the Bison flute and found that it sounded harmonious with her song so started to test it by recording. However, I got lucky and immediately found inspiration and just kept on playing. The only edit was a fade at the end. The further on I played the more worried I became about screwing it up! Recorded in 2008, it was my first and only recording with that flute.

Sitar meets a Native American Flute

Shakti Guitar is the continuation of a musical journey that began many years ago when Stevin McNamara first fell in love with North Indian classical music. Having grown up in South Africa, surrounded by African sounds and rhythms and imported music from the USA and Europe in the forms of jazz, blues and rock, he was unprepared for the stunning effect on first hearing Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Nikhil Banerjee, to name a few. The result was an ever-growing passion for North Indian classical music that became even more real as he was fortunate to study sitar with Ram Das Chakravarty of Benares.

As the years have gone by, all this music has grown into a personal style that encompasses all these influences and is now presented on the nylon string guitar. It is important to note that the music on this album is not classical North Indian music, but rather a personal style that has developed through a deep immersion in that centuries-old tradition.

I play a variety of Native flutes (woodwind) and in various musical styles from very traditional solo to Dance and Ambient/Electronic/RnB/DnB etc etc.

I don’t read sheet music and just wing it and play from the heart. As Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones says: "You just let it roll and see how far it will go... It's a wonderful thing... It's called Music".
