Following the success of their deliciously dark & mesmerising debut album 'Hollowing Out', Red Telephone’s upcoming album 'Delay The New Day' see’s their ever evolving sound push boundaries even further. 

Building on their signature blend of melodic psych and darkwave, Red Telephone promise to further explore this fusion with the addition of cinematic influences to their sophomore effort. 

Led by the quintet's knack for multi-instrumental intricacies, Red Telephone's latest work evokes comparisons to MGMT, St. Vincent, or fellow Welsh icons Super Furry Animals, while staying true to the unique style they established in their critically acclaimed debut. 

Driven by a desire to make an instinctive and honest sounding record after watching the ‘Let it Be’ documentary, the band set themselves the self-imposed rule of having to arrange the songs in less than a month and record it as live as possible. Having only recently welcomed their first full-time drummer into the fray, this latest project boasts an impressively cohesive sound, capturing a specific time and place for the individuals and as a group.

Thematically, the album delves into the struggles faced by countless aspiring artists: the relentless juggling act of day jobs and creative pursuits, the bombardment of conflicting advice on achieving ‘success’, and the ever-present fear of losing sight of the initial spark that ignited the passion. 

'Delay The New Day' is a tapestry of paranoia, self-doubt, and the sheer determination it takes to carve a path in the music industry. But even deeper than that, it’s about refusing to compromise on artistic vision, and embodying the underdog’s mentality to keep creating for the right reasons.

Combining a passion for melodic psych and darkwave, Red Telephone’s 2023 debut album ‘Hollowing Out’ was described by Clash Music as “Gritty, brilliantly dark and expansive. A deliciously dark, mesmerising and a dystopian-tinged sonic palette that could have been heard in Bowie’s Berlin in the late 1970’s. An impressive and masterful debut.” 

Hailing from Cardiff, the multi-instrumentalists with two sets of brothers in their ranks released their first two singles as a double A-side vinyl on Welsh cult label Popty-Ping and have been championed by Huw Stephens & Steve Lamacq. The five-piece recently finished recording their second album, which is due for release in October 2024.

As the countdown to their sophomore album 'Delay The New Day' enters its final stretch, Cardiff multi-intrumentalists Red Telephone offer fans one last sonic appetiser with ‘Sentimental Dreaming’.  

Driven by a hypnotic bassline and layered with ethereal synths, ‘Sentimental Dreaming’ comes with an interesting backstory. Born from a 15 minute acoustic guitar session intended to fix the chorus of a different song, the track became one of the first the band worked on for their new album. However, its journey to completion was far from straightforward, going through multiple iterations, including a bold foray into Robyn-inspired pop, before finding its final form in a spontaneous late-night studio session.

“We started listening back to practice recordings of all the different versions we’d attempted and there was this one phone recording with this really rhythmic, catchy bassline by Dom,” lead singer Declan says of the song’s construction. “We were basically recording it ten minutes later on the fly and didn’t leave the studio until about 2am."

With nods to Suede and Talking Heads, and a bridge that channels Roy Orbison, ‘Sentimental Dreaming’ emerges as a serendipitous anthem for the band, capturing their eclectic influences and innovative approach to songcraft. 

Of the song’s lyrics Declan says “There’s obviously this idealistic sentimentality in dreaming - it almost sounds like a sweet, harmless thing to do - but it’s deceptively powerful, because it can send us down paths that end up dictating not only behaviour but entire periods of our lives and ways of living.”

Building on their debut record's blend of melodic psych and darkwave, Red Telephone promises to further explore this fusion with the addition of cinematic influences in their upcoming releases. Their first single, ‘Delay The New Day’, delves into themes of indulgence and hedonistic distraction, examining how the allure of nights out and easy comforts can become laborious and repetitive. Driven by the quintet's knack for multi-instrumental intricacies, Red Telephone's latest work evokes comparisons to Arctic Monkeys' newer sound (like Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino or The Car) while staying true to the unique style they established in their critically acclaimed debut. 

‘Delay The New Day’ offers the first glimpse into Red Telephone’s upcoming album of the same name. Recorded semi-live in a short timeframe and featuring their first full-time drummer, this latest project aims for a more cohesive sound, capturing a specific time and place for the individuals and as a group. Primarily written in solitude by members Declan and Kieran on guitar and piano, the album places a strong emphasis on melody and lyricism from the outset. Thematically, it explores the challenges of balancing full-time work with being a musician, and the alienation caused by conflicting advice on how to succeed, straying from their original musical intentions.

Of the process they said “It’s about the paranoia, doubt and dissolution that goes with the territory of pushing yourself and trying to carve out a path where you hopefully get to survive on what you love doing. Even songs on the album that aren’t directly about this still tie into the theme, for example, Delay the New Day, which is about indulgence and hedonistic distraction at the expense of creating.”

Red Telephone are a three-piece from Cardiff who formed in late 2017. With a sound that has been compared to the likes of Suede, MGMT, Syd Barrett, St Vincent and T-Rex, the band’s first three singles have already received enthusiastic support and airplay from DJs such as Amy Lame, Huw Stephens, Janice Long, Bethan Elfyn, Adam Walton, Jim Gellatly and Charlie Ashcroft. There is a timeless quality and other-worldly melancholic sadness that hangs on every passing note from Cardiff's most exciting psychedelic night urchins, who have brought a distinctly modern approach to all that was good about British psychedelia yet defy categorization, instead boldly pushing sonic and stylistic boundaries. Their latest single, ‘I’m Always Thinking About You’, captures the disorientation of a new infatuation and delves into the mental anguish and uncertainty that accompanies it. The track brings together the immediacy of classic song-writing with weaving, angular guitars and instantly memorable rhythmic hooks. 

Red Telephone played FOCUS Wales Festival in May 2018 on the BBC Broadcast Stage in what was only their third gig at the time and were singled out off the back of it as “having the potential to soundtrack a generation" by Drowned in Sound. Their second single ‘Victoria Park’ was released through Libertino Records’ Ghost Disco singles club and they played Tallinn Music Week in May 2019. All Red Telephone songs so far have been recorded in Cardiff and are produced by Steffan Pringle (Estrons, Adwaith and Himalayas).
