Redux is an experimental sound art and performance duo consisting of Mark Cetilia and Joe Cantrell. An exercise in destruction and recombination, they explore new possible forms in both digital and physical sound creation, with an eye to larger systems and movements, both technological and human.

In February 2023, Redux performed and recorded in Providence, RI and Western MA. The materials captured in these performances were then edited and reassembled to form an entirely new piece, as presented here.

Transmission / Assembly

Field:Line is a site-specific performance for pre-recorded electronics, environmental sounds and musicians at Legg Lake in South El Monte, CA. In addition to being a recreational space and stopover for migratory birds, Legg Lake is intersected by towering high-powered electrical lines, the sounds of which create delicate fields of crackling sound above the visitors walking underneath. Field:Line explores the intersections between this sonic environment, a twelve-channel piece incorporating location recordings gathered at Legg Lake and synthesized sounds, as well as an open score for live performers.

Field:Line

Excerpt from a live broadcast of the premiere performance of “Song for Søren Larsen“ on WXGC 90.7 FM, developed as part of an artist residency at the Wave Farm in Acra, NY in June 2013. This piece takes advantage of various aspects of radio and other broadcast media to create a generative audio space enabled by the contributions and commingling of the electromagnetic broadcast spectrum with the bodies of the performers. A network of three recursive audio feedback sub-systems was used to construct the performance. These systems include short wave loop antenna hardware, low power AM transmission, and the unique opportunity afforded by the Wave Farm residency, access to the full-power signal of WGXC’s FM transmitter.
