'State of Silence'

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

When I first discovered Donato Dozzy’s early records around 2006, I was immediately captured by the warm and hypnotic feel of his music. From that moment on, I’ve been a big fan of Dozzy’s work, over the years, collecting more and more of his music - from the solo projects and remixes to his well-known collaborations with other great artists. At some point the idea occurred to me: why not paying homage to this great artist in form of a tribute mix? It took me quite a while to bring the idea into reality, but now here it is. During the process of selecting the tracks for the mix, I got the feeling I wanted to create something more geared toward home listening or a walk around the city with headphones. For this reason, I slowed things down a bit and kept the whole mix under 120 bpm.

Phonatic - Dozzy Dives Under 120

Rrose—named after Marcel Duchamp's character, Rrose Selavey—is a dark and mysterious figure who makes dark and mysterious music. It comes mainly on his own Eaux label after early forays on the influential Sandwell District, and it combines mean and heavy overtones with more lithe and agile synths work. Most recently this American producer and live act served up an absorbing album of droning soundscapes on Seattle’s Further Records, whilst 2015’s EP output has seen him master supple techno forms drenched in reverb and soot black atmospheres.   This deep, thick and industrially influenced sound carries over in to his live set, and that is exactly what we are serving up for you on our next podcast. 

This one hour session is an absorbing one that sucks you deep down a blackened rabbit hole. It is one that recreates his show at this year's Dekmantel Festival and across the course of an hour invites your mind to get lost in elongated synth lines that slowly drift about like planets in orbit. Occasional percussive patterns and crunchy textures get loosely scattered across the airwaves and along the way the brooding clouds break to let in some blissful rays of optimism. There are few who have a sound as focussed and singular as this, as this podcast proves.

Everybody has a little bit of the sun and moon in them. Everybody has a little bit of man, woman, and animal in them. Darks and lights in them. Everyone is part of a connected cosmic system. Part earth and sea, wind and fire, with some salt and dust swimming in them. We have a universe within ourselves that mimics the universe outside. None of us are just black or white, or never wrong and always right. No one. No one exists without polarities. Everybody has good and bad forces working with them, against them, and within them.

"This mix was inspired by my friends, the people I am most closely connected to. I wanted to create something calm and beautiful, to offer some brief respite and escape. I might compile a tracklist at some point, but for now please just disconnect, zone out, and enjoy the mix. It was recorded in one take at home in Tokyo, October 2016. This mix was recorded at Institut für Zukunft in Leipzig, where we played a four hour opening set. We made some small edits and added some tracks to finalise the mix. There is a magic about playing opening sets, and this night was special in particular — the lights got turned off and we played our first ambient track as a tuft of smoke was blown into club, which remained midair in the middle of the dance floor, like a sculpture — and it slowly vanished. The first guest came in and sat down against the concrete column, listening attentively as more smoke-sculptures formed around him. We were happy to play the first 20 minutes just for him.
