During the 35 years of making music, Dave Lee has constantly been searching for new singers and writers to work with. A search that’s ended up with many fantastic collaborations and releases with the likes of Thelma Houston, Taka Boom, Dianne Charlemagne and Seal. More recently this quest led him to Maurissa Rose and the creation of their album ‘London / Detroit’. After hearing Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish record Dave reached out to her and after a few long phone conversations and mp3 swaps, they both agreed a visit to London would be much more fun than trying to work together remotely. Maurissa made the journey from her home in Detroit to write and record an album with Dave at his studio in March 2022 - as they both feel that creating music together in the same room is always better. The fruits of their labour yielded 11 brand new songs (and 1 cover) tapping into their collective love of Soul, Disco and R&B, with a sprinkle of Soulful House. This album is a special one for Dave Lee as it’s the first time in his career he’s recorded an entire album with the same singer on every track.

In the album’s liner notes Dave talks of how Maurissa is a naturally creative person, full of ideas, warm & unpretentious which is reflected in her vocal performances throughout ‘London / Detroit’. Dave’s expertly crafted music is backed up with a deeply passionate yet effortless delivery from the Detroiter, a marker of someone who has honed and perfected their art. When it comes to the music side of this LP, Dave Lee is once again proving he’s still at the top of his game and shows no sign of relenting. Drawing from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Soul/Funk/Disco, we are treated to a range of styles, BPMs and influences from 95bpm street soul to more uptempo disco and boogie flavours. Be it the rippling synth voyage opener of ‘You Decide’, taking the Johnnie Taylor classic ‘What About My Love’ into a modern Boogie realm, upping the tempo on the soulful houser ‘I Feel the Sun” or bringing the tempo back down to the bassy acidic chug of ‘You’re Giving Me Life’. Mr Lee is truly adept at creating a modern disco soul sound without the usage of samples.

London and Detroit might be two very different cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic but this album is proof that creative synergy knows no distance.

Not a lot of introduction needed here. London based soul brothers Andy Platt “The Young Gun” and Shawn Lee “The Silver Fox” met back in 2005, but busy men that they are, it took until 2018 for their now legendary debut album to arrive. Never had the modern Neo Westcoast sounded warmer, fresher and more sophisticated – a truly timeless retro-futurist debut. Their contribution here is very special, a collaboration with two other legends of the past, Robbie Nevil and Steve Lindsey. As Shawn explains: “In January 2024, Andy and I went to L.A. to do some writing before we embarked on a US tour with Young Gun Silver Fox. We holed up in the Santa Monica beach front studio of L.A. music veteran Steve Lindsey. We were also joined there by Robbie Nevil of “C’est La Vie” fame. A normal YGSF Monday! It quickly became quite clear that our very first effort ‘Curious’ was sounding very YGSF!” Here at TSTD we have long held a hope of getting these cats on board, so we couldn’t be happier to finally have this stunning Westcoast soul classic exclusive.

Time to take a trip back to the Windy City. A firm favourite song from Dave Lee’s highly acclaimed ‘Metamorphosis’ album under his AC Soul Symphony alias. This time we’ve pulled in some heavyweight remixes to refresh things up.

The main man Dave Lee has flipped it musically, but still with reference and reverence to Chicago with a deep jackin’ Chi-Town Tribute Mix, slapping a thick 303 front and centre. Up next is the Windy City legend himself, Glenn Underground, with his irresistibly cosmic take, drawing on his deep jazz-funk knowledge. Finishing up is a man we all know and love here at ZR, Opolopo, allowing the heart of the original to refract through his plethora of boogie-funk synth work & studio wizardry.

The Sunburst Band's lush "In The Thick Of It" has been a big club and radio hit throughout the summer, one that has even won praise from diehard fans of the Brenda Russell original. 

Now Sweden's Opolopo (hot from his Gregory Porter “1960 What” rework) gives the track an 80’s boogie/proto house rework. 

Squelchy stabs and funked up synth bass make this a sure fire winner for both the muso’s and dancefloors. 

Yes, there are quite a few boogie influenced house tracks but most of them are based around big samples, where as this contains none. 

If you prefer things a little less vocal then check the Boogie Body Land Dub, this grooves along without any house clichés.
