Following releases from label founder Palms Trax, a reissue of eighties Chicago House innovator Rog’e, and a pair of cassette mixtapes from Berlin-based selectors Enchanted Rhythm and Budino, CWPT looks to the North-East of England for its next release, live and direct from REES. 

Hot on the heels of a twelve-inch on Bordello A Parigi and underscoring a slowly simmering reputation as one of the brightest stars of his community, REES’s debut on CWPT is a classy and globally informed perspective on house, disco and acid styles. 

Undistilled rhythm is at the heart of REES’s vision of club culture; on title track, Devils Club, it’s effect makes itself known immediately, driving a channel of lively percussion towards a series of tasteful breakdowns that are both propulsive and alluring. On ‘Magic’, a confidently raw, loose drum loop accelerates into a glossy, psychedelic speed-chase that’s pure Miami Vice reimagined in Middlesbrough. 

On the flip, two versions of ‘The Spirit’ tastefully expand beyond REES’s musical borders and into warm, cinematic territory, blending tropically tinted instrumentation with (and then without) an entrancing vocal sample.

Premiere: REES ‘Magic’

The rainforest was alive with all manner of sounds and smells; everywhere you turned there was something new to take in. Birds chirped high above; insects buzzed loudly in harmony; all carried by the gentle breeze that drifted through the branches. They joined together to create a sweet cacophony of sounds, like nature's own personal choir. This place belonged to them; it belonged to the trees and the plants, to the insects and the mammals, to the rivers and the springs; this was their home and, at least for now, it was untarnished by mankind.

DJ and producer REES has been making quite the storm recently with his slick take on Italo Disco and the synth-driven sounds of the 80s, whilst also flying the flag for his home of Middlesborough. Releases for Bordello A Parigi, Permanent Vacation, Internasjonal and his own Paradiso imprint have housed these sounds so far, and now he heads to Palms Trax's CWPT imprint for another batch of driving cuts. Rhythm is at the core of the four tracks on Devils Club which, once again, tip the hat to his favourite musical era through propulsive bass lines, crisp percussion and soaring synth melodies.

Rees landed on Bordello A Parigi with a bang. His “Three Eyes” track left dancefloors slippy and listeners wanting more. Thankfully, the Middlesborough musician only too glad to comply. Dream Wave collects three tracks that are emblematic of Rees’ enviable ability. A serial cross pollinator, genre lines are blurred before being rewritten. “A Dream Wave” melts rich basslines and muscled percussion with a daringly upbeat counter melody. Kick drums usher in “The New Beat”. Flourishes float above the thump before Rees lets loose. Acid barbs, rave shouts and Eastern echoes coalesce in this unique work. Keeping bodies moving until the very end, Rees delivers “Electric Body”. Guitar strings and incising snares collide with a hypnotic synthline that adopts elements of synth pop and full bodied techno. A record that perfectly illustrates the versatility of this style shifting artist.

REES is a producer and DJ based in the north of of England, Middlesborough to be precise. His tastes are rooted in the darker side of electronic music, drawn towards Acid, Electro and EBM making for a mean and eclectic selector in the booth. As the co founder of Magic Ritmo, he has been responsible for the release and re-release of eclectic leftfield cuts from the likes of Adel Dhibi and G.F.X having sought to breathe life back into highly sought after material.

This in and of itself demonstrates a keen sensibility to dig for records and establish a sense of sound.

His recent release came on our good friend and crew member Rosie’s label Human Endeavour and it’s firmly rooted in the sound of chug.

We invited REES to show us what he’s all about as he steps up with a killer mix of heavy hitting sounds which will work wonderfully in dark, sweaty rooms.

"Up next for episode 150 on the series is a mix from DJ, producer & label owner, REES. The Paradiso Records founder very recently dropped a new EP on Zone Focus, so first we caught up to find out what else he’s been up to and what the idea is behind the mix:

Like most of the world, COVID-19 has put the handbrakes on a lot of what I have been working on, to be honest. It’s a shame as up until lockdown things were starting to click with shows locked in Amsterdam, Germany and all across the UK. Once things clear up these will get re-arranged.
I guess the big positive that has come out of this newfound normality is the free time. I’ve put a lot of time into my label, Paradiso Records. Revamping our branding, prepping for releases and planning for the next 12 months. Also, I have recently satisfied an itch that so desperately needed scratching and bought myself Juno-106 and Oberheim Matrix-1000 so as you can imagine I practically live in my studio now.

Obviously, with the lockdown, the logistics have become a bit more complicated. I’ve converted one of the rooms in my house in the mighty Boro into a home studio. This mix was recorded on a set of trusty old Pioneer CDJ 900s and mixer.

In three words? ’80’s power hour. In all seriousness, I wanted to demonstrate what I am all about. There is a selection of new and old tracks that pay homage to the greatest decade of music the ’80s. When I’m in the mix I like to keep things slow and psychedelic to start before building the energy and finishing with what it is all about, Italo-disco. A lot of vintage synths and phat snares with a sprinkle of panorama bar – that’s me.

Up next…

I’ve just dropped my Panoramic Love EP on Zone Focus last month. And have also just signed some music to Nein Records and have my first 12” coming out on Shadow City which I’m super proud of. In terms of shows, I don’t want to jinx anything but the possibility is no longer unrealistic and it is looking like I’ll be in Lithuania and London this month with Edinburgh, Grimsby and Newcastle to follow shortly after for some safe dancing. Fingers crossed the country keeps moving in the right direction."
