GusGus - Crossfade (Michael Mayer Mix)

This fall, Trevino makes a rare appearance off the golf course with a four-track EP on his brand-new label, Birdie. Up to this point, the Manchester-based producer's work has been scattered across imprints manned by industry heavyweights like Ben Klock's 'Klockworks' and Martyn's '3024', but now he's made a home for his own relentless output. It was a natural step for a stalwart who never stops creating, and manning his own platform has allowed him to explore the depths of his sound with no holds barred.
The EP opens with "To The Core", a driving house track with melancholic synths and metallic percussion. "Warmer" is more of a sunrise jam; it inspires a sense of wonder with gliding synths, yo-yoing melodies, and cute bleep-bloops. The b-side features the more ominous track "Playtime", which develops a menacing edge with a gritty bassline, and "Mesmerize," another psychedelic cut with wavering synths and glittering instrumentation.

Ripperton - Overcome

The unstoppable force that has become the Will & Ink label now offers up its first remix EP. Those hand picked to work their own magic on three originals by the the Will & Ink production duo are Fachwerk’s Roman Lindau, Greek born Emmanuel and Yaleesa Hall, the mysterious artist who released her debut EP on this label back in 2014. 

Up first is techno heavyweight Roman Lindau, who is a key part of the Fachwerk label. He tackles ‘Mersellanious’ from the Mersenne EP and does so with his usual stripped back, well swung sense of techno funk. Next up is ARTS label owner Emannuel, who goes for a fierce, intense and edgy peak time techno banger full of raw texture and incendiary drums on his remix of 'Third Wilson' from 2013. Lastly, Yaleesa Hall sets to work on a track from the same EP and does so with a little, fluid sense of hypnotic techno groove that comes embellished with heady synths and a real sense of purpose. Once again here the Will & Ink label is showing the way when it comes to contemporary techno talent.

In the darkest basement the cries echoed cheerfully in the black. As she wandered steadily forwards she began to hear the sound of drums and caught a glimpse of the frantic faces which hustled past her in the hallway. The lights began to flash and the music filled the little space. She had been warned about people like this, the dancers amidst the midnight hour. The love, enthusiasm and hectic disorientation had left her excited and wanting more.

Taking the reins for SHDW 004 is Jeigo. Having interned at Phonica, Rye Wax and now Worldwide FM, Jeigo’s wide palette and deep crates are evident on this classy four track E.P which features a tasty remix from Big Miz on the flip.

The record emerges from the shadows with a remote sense of longing, an evocative collage of interweaving vocal chops are propelled along by a muted but agitated synth. ‘Everywhere I Go’ is a hoods up, heads down track with enough club ready clout to shift the mood of a dance. Bringing side A to an emphatic close is the swaggering groove of ‘Lord Buck Jazz’. 

The percussion, bassline and vocal sample strut around the stereo field like a particularly brazen peacock. A tune full of character, confidence and control, its syncopated flow immediately gets you up to get down. 

‘Not Used To Love’ opens with an unusual rhythmic pattern which is soon backed by a chorus of swirling synth and distant vocals. Jeigo strikes an intricate balance between melancholy and warmth, as sub bass rumbles before it crumbles and dissolves into the mix. This track showcases him not so much as a beatmaker but as a storyteller, the listener is immediately transported to a different place. A deep cut. 

The widely respected Big Miz rounds up proceedings with a remix of ‘Lordbuck Jazz’ that brims with energy and intent. A bright bubbler, full of low end thrills and top end frills, that doesn’t stop moving for a moment. No messing about. It boasts a head nodding, toe tapping bounce that’s sure to get the dancefloor moving. 

SHDW 004 is versatile and essential.

Originally written and produced as the centrepiece to his 2014 FabricLive compilation, Erol Alkan’s ‘Sub Conscious' arrives on 12” vinyl and to streaming platforms for the first time, accompanied by two charismatic remixes from Manfredas.

Shimmering and undulating, the original cut of ‘Sub Conscious’ was designed with Fabric’s cavernous main room in mind, taking full advantage of any finely-tuned soundsystem with a patient, rhythmic trip. Remastered here, the track evolves out of hazy darkness towards halcyon euphoria in a uniquely Alkan style.

Resident at Opium Club in Vilnius, cult DJ and producer Manfredas provides two hugely creative and alternative takes on ‘Sub Conscious’. The first works hallucinatory magic with a supple bassline and much of Alkan’s original stretched and repurposed around vampish oscillations and a westward vocal sample.

On the contrary, the ‘Stream Of Consciousness' mix sees Manfredas pitch down and strum the bones of ‘Sub Conscious’, unexpectedly delivering a lovingly lethargic, bottom-heavy jam that’s pure dubside pleasure.
