Following his successful debut album of Spanish composers, Roberto Moronn Pérez performs
selected works from the "Andrés Segovia Archive", this time showcasing the French composers. The genesis for this unique project is a collection of pieces recovered in May 2001 at Segovia's home in Spain. These pieces were dedicated to Segovia or commissioned by him, involving composers from eight countries. They were subsequently published as “The Segovia Archive Series” by Edizione Musicale Bèrben. Guitarist Roberto Moronn Pérez researched these newly recovered works and found some pieces that had never been recorded, and those that had were handicapped by poor visibility in the marketplace and limited distribution. This realization sparked the thought that here was an opportunity: a series of recordings organized around the nationalities of the composers in the Segovia Archive.

This new album was recorded in the lovely acoustics of Holy Trinity Church, Weston, Hertfordshire, U.K. It was produced, recorded and edited by the outstanding U.K. engineerJohn Taylor. Mastering is by Reference Recordings’ own GRAMMY®-winning engineer Keith O. Johnson.

For more than 116 years, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has been known for its artistic excellence. The PSO has a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians. Past conductors include the legendary names of Reiner, Steinberg, Previn, Maazel, and other greats. This tradition was furthered in fall 2008, when celebrated Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

In 2010 she earned the Fellow certificate from the American Guild of Organists, the highest certification available for organists. New to our Fresh! series is Robert Moore, jazz vocalist, composer, trumpet and harmonica player based in Portland. He has evolved a sound uniquely his own, mixing his Southern roots, influences of soul and gospel into his own distinct interpretations of bebop and swinging jazz.

Outta My Soul showcases six originals and six compositions from diverse writers including Frank Loesser, Sting, Gene Ammons and King Pleasure — one instrumental and eleven vocals from delicate to scat to blues proclamation. There’s even a Ken Nordine-esque spoken ‘word jazz’ number.

Moore started his singing career in a Southern Baptist church, and that early heartfelt gospel truth can still be heard in the soulful delivery of his music.

Anton Bruckner is known as a deeply religious composer whose Catholic spirituality is prominent in his music, particularly his later symphonies. However, his Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major (“Romantic”) is one of his most secular, most influenced by nature and most popular works. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Manfred Honeck offer a bold new interpretation of this great music, breaking Bruckner out of the strictly interpreted box in which he is often placed. Here, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Honeck present the 1878/80 version, the same version that was used for the symphony’s premiere in 1881.

Leo Delibes’ COPPÉLIA is pure delight, a feast of musicality and humor for all ages. Probably the greatest ballet comedy ever written! On this disc we also present Delibes’ SYLVIA, a romance filled with sighs of longing and the thrill of infatuation. Set in antiquity, the ballet literally places love on a pedestal in the person of the Greek god Eros.

Like many popular compositions, Delibes’ works, including pieces of these ballets, have repeatedly been used in films dating back to the earliest talkies. His music is also a favorite of cartoon series “Ren and Stimpy” and “The Simpsons.”

The San Francisco Ballet, the oldest professional ballet company in America, was also one of the first dance companies to have its own permanent body of musicians. By the 1990s the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra was generally regarded as one of the finest ballet orchestras in the world. Notably, in 1995, the Orchestra accompanied 12 international dance companies, as well as San Francisco Ballet, during the ambitious, weeklong United We Dance Festival, which promoted international communication and understanding.

John Wasson's long musical career began as a pre-schooler, when he started picking out tunes on the family piano. He began arranging music for band when he was still in high school, and went on to become an accomplished arranger, composer, and performer. A Wasson work commissioned by the Dallas Wind Symphony, "Festival Fanfare for Christmas" offers the trumpet section an opportunity to step out with a series of intricate fanfares built from well-known Christmas melodies. Before the piece is over the rest of the brass have joined in, as well as Mary Preston on the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center's magnificent Lay Family organ.

The five pieces presented here offer a musical panorama from composer Frank Ticheli (b.1958). Light to dark, to joyous jazz celebration, it is all here for the listener. The first four pieces are among the best by this famed concert band composer. The final composition, PLAYING WITH FIRE combines the mighty Dallas Wind Symphony with enthusiastic playing by the 7-piece Jim Cullum Jazz Band! Wind band fans and traditional jazz enthusiasts will revel in these splendid performances.

Conducted by Jerry Junkin and recorded in the Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas TX, the great music and its exceptional sonic palette are expertly captured by Reference Recordings' world-renowned team of engineer Keith Johnson and producer Tam Henderson. 

FRANK TICHELI is well known for his works for concert band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire. He has appeared as guest conductor of his music at Carnegie Hall, at many American universities and music festivals, and in cities throughout the world. Ticheli joined the faculty of the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music in 1991, where he is Professor of Composition. His music has been described as “optimistic and thoughtful” (Los Angeles Times), “lean and muscular” (New York Times), and “brilliantly effective” (Miami Herald).

Organized in 1962, the JIM CULLUM JAZZ BAND is known worldwide for playing classic jazz plus music by great American composers. Since 1987, the weekly Riverwalk radio broadcasts (PRI) have featured the ensemble with distinguished musical guests. 

Conductor JERRY JUNKIN is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Wind Symphony, as well as Director of Bands at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also holds the title of University Distinguished Teaching Professor. 

America’s premier professional wind band, the DALLAS WIND SYMPHONY was founded in 1985 and has made over 15 recordings. Consisting of woodwinds, brass and percussion, they perform and record in the I. M. Pei-designed Meyerson Symphony Center.

The genesis for this unique project is a collection of pieces recovered in May 2001 at Segovia's home in Spain. These pieces were dedicated to Segovia or commissioned by him, involving composers from eight countries. They were subsequently published as “The Segovia Archive Series” by Edizione Musicale Bèrben.

Guitarist Roberto Moronn Pérez researched these newly recovered works and found some pieces that had never been recorded, and those that had were handicapped by poor visibility in the marketplace and limited distribution. This realization sparked the thought that here was an opportunity: a series of recordings organized around the nationalities of the composers in the Segovia Archive. The Spanish composers recorded here are the first in the series,to be followed soon by an album of the French composers.

Spanish-born Roberto Moronn Pérez studied in Madrid, Italy and the UK, graduating with first-class honours and a degree in Musicology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He completed a postgraduate program at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London,where he received the Julian Bream Prize and was selected to participate at the Wigmore Hall Award. A prize-winner of many international competitions, Roberto has appeared as soloist in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, the USA, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Germany and Japan, and in concert with numerous Spanish orchestras. Recently, he played the famous Concierto de Aranjuez with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.

This new album was recorded in the lovely acoustics of Holy Trinity Church, Weston, Hertfordshire, U.K. It was produced, recorded and edited by the outstanding U.K. engineer John Taylor. Mastering is by Reference Recordings’ own Grammy®-winning engineer Keith O. Johnson.
