The seventeenth instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them. 

Next up on the mix series is Stoffy. We’ve known Stoffy for years now (first meeting at college back in 2011!), but only recently appreciated his love for electronic music. A founding member of the London and Bristol based collective @Coopaudio, Stoffy helped bring one of the first Lambda Labs sound systems to the UK, putting on intimate club nights and even a yearly festival over the past few years. An avid vinyl collector, Stoffy has developed a raw and unique sound DJing dance music; blending deep house cuts with percussive techy tracks and breakbeat influenced acid. This 100% vinyl mix perfectly reflects Stoffy’s dedication to the music he loves and his flourishing as a selector.

Premiere : Ruven Medici - Back To The Roots  [NBN008]

This EP contains 4 tracks inspired by the dance music boom in Europe from the late 80s to early 90s. Luis composed all the tracks using a Novation BassStation, an Akai MPC 2000XL for the drums and sampling, and a Korg M1 for the pads and melodies, using the occasional VST where appropriate.

A1 “Miedo aqui estoy” (Fear, here I am) combines a fast bassline with a hypnotic melody, New Wave influences and shades of electro unite to create an immersive atmosphere. The message ‘no to fear’ being transmitted through optimistic and euphoric pads. 

A2 “Neminem Laedere”, inspired by New Wave sounds and rhythm, this track uses bright synths to create audio textures that invite introspection. The hypnotic melodies repeat throughout, enforcing the title's message ‘do no harm’.

B1 “Noches y Amaneceres” Taking the heavy and dark rhythms of new beat and entwining the contagious melodies of Italo provided by bright synths, this fusion gives the track a unique bouncy atmosphere.

B2 “Violines en el barrio”, A track that revolves around a focus on sampling. The breakbeat influence accompanying synths with an 80s flavour and pads providing a deeper texture.

As with every Trippy Cat release, this EP continues the cosmic saga of Dollar the cat. Through music, Dollar travels to distant planets, guiding listeners through worlds unknown in the pursuit of sound.
The release includes two solid remixes. Dollar Cat is reimagined by Prince de Takicardie, delivering a hypnotic Dark House sound, perfect for late-night dancefloors in uncharted galaxies. The second remix comes from DOTT for Serving Size, whose style blends deep minimal rhythms with interstellar vibes, creating a striking contrast to the darker tones of the first remix.

This release is a tribute not only to Dollar but to all the beloved cats who have left their mark on our hearts.

The second instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them.

As a co-founder of the Sheffield-based Rave New World night Andrew Cook aka Soundboy Cookie immediately established himself in the underground garage scene. This success up north was swiftly followed by a move to London, a slew of swinging productions and recognition from some of the most prominent figures in the scene such as Perception, DJ Shy Dee and El-B. Here he shows why we refer to him as the 2-step garage guru – introducing us to the scenes thriving new school, including forthcoming and unreleased material as well as adding some breakbeat/techno flavour for good measure.

We are very proud to present the third mix in this ever-evolving series. As current president of Leeds’s leading DJ society BPM, Tañ is (in every sense) a party starter. From putting on open deck nights for up and coming DJs to test their skills on a club standard setup, to spinning tunes in Belgrave for 3 hours, she has a proven track record. This one is not for the faint hearted. Clocking in at 76 minutes and including an incredible 40 tracks, Tañ provides us with an insight into her fierce, powerful and club ready sound.

The fourth instalment of the Reference Mark Mix Series. Past, present and future friends of the label are given the chance to reference the sounds that define them.

Tything Collective make their second appearance in the series with The Third Worst DJ In England aka Jacob Ratcliffe. As the host of The Bootleg John Peel Show on Threads Radio (previously hosted on 199 Radio) Jacob effortlessly ties music together not by distinct genres or bpm but by timbre and feel. His shows cover everything from Aphex Twin to Nina Simone to Omar Souleyman to a Wiley Vs Kano clash; RMM004 follows suit. This is a true odyssey, starting at funk, going through the hardcore continuum (briefly stopping at Bollywood and new wave on the way!) and ending up at the Looney Tunes.

Reference Mark Mix 004 ※ The Third Worst DJ In England

In collaboration with Paris' recordshop Dizonord, Knekelhuis will close the summer of 2019 with this amazing gem. Beyond the Beat will burst dancefloors soon. 

Founded in 1990 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cold Front were what you'd call early adaptors, their music at the time of its inception an oddity. This fourpiece, consisting of spouses Ayanna and Cam Muata, Jon Jon Scott and Ron Clark, were far ahead of their time and faded just as rapidly as they entered the stage, only playing a handful of local shows in support of Nine Inch Nails, Meat Beat Manifesto and such, alongside several cameos during early house nights and techno events.

Though short lived, their music nevertheless speaks volumes. It's intriguing stuff, a magical association of sound reminiscent of Ron Hardy and Klein MBO. New Beat-like drum parts, overdubbed by politically engaged raps, basslines that would make The Cure proud, held together by freakout speaking in tongues vocal experiments while also showing an obvious parallel to the rise of triphop at the other side of the ocean.

After a short break, we are back to bring you another hour of power. This time we are blessed with another BPM affiliate, Alice Tapper. If you’ve ever been to a Love Muscle, Equaliser or Brudenell Groove night in Leeds then you will have seen Alice – whether that be witnessing her get groovy behind the decks in the bar at Wharf Chambers, Sheaf Street or Belgrave, or giving it all on the dancefloor - you will have seen her. The connection to these distinctly energetic nights can be heard throughout this 90% vinyl mix with Alice’s own character and charm shining through. Be prepared for powerful vocals, funky basslines and a sprinkle of tasteful acapellas.
