Friday’s here again and we have another exclusive mixtape for you for your listening pleasure. This week’s playlist has been created for KALTBLUT by Aleksandra Grünholz, a.k.a. We Will Fail, a project focused on pleasure of wandering. Field recordings, tape samples, synthesizers and electronic drum kits are mixed together to find some peculiar quality, referring to techno aesthetics. Multi dimensional artist Aleksandra’s work as a graphic designer has a clear influence on the visuals and creativity of her music, and she has compiled a diverse selection of tracks that will give you an insight into her own influences and style.

We Will Fail - "Schadenfreude"

As a slower, more selective label, Refined Productions defines its imprint ethos as being reactionary to the output of contemporary music. With a goal to “reset the pace”, label head Alexsandra Grunholz, AKA We Will Fail, steps up to the mark this month with the imprint’s first release, a visceral four-tracker titled ‘Schadenfreude’. 

Complete with two feverish remixes, one of which we’re premiering today, the release is a rasping, dark yet inherently refined project that teeters on the bleeding-edges of experimental sounds. 

The ‘Schadenfreude’ EP is out January 19 on Refined Productions, with a further project featuring the likes of M.E.S.H and Peder Mannerfelt landing on the label later this year.

The release represents a complete rethink about what it means to compile and commission music in the streaming era – and the tracks and seductively dark atmospheres conjured as a result are exploring all kinds of new sonic territory, too. In short, the cream of leftfield electronic talent have been given a brief: to take the phrase “in Death's dream kingdom”, or the whole of T.S. Eliot's poem The Hollow Men from which it comes, as inspiration.

The resulting 25 tracks will be released, day by day, together with further artist information, to build into the full work. Not an album in the traditional sense, certainly more than just a playlist, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the 90s – Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis – but there are no throwbacks here: this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times.
