Reformed Society - Basic Moves 19 (2 x 12")[Basic Moves]

This new EP on OCD is once again another project into which we’ve poured all our love and attention, carefully working with the artist to compile a release that would, at least in our vision, stand the test of time.

Our friend Harsh (Reformed Society) caught our attention through his outstanding double EP on Basic Moves. A subsequent, very synchronistic real-life encounter with him in Barcelona led to this EP, which pays homage to the early 2000s Progressive House era.

This era played an important role in our musical journey, as it did in Harsh’s own. Within this project, he fuses the influences of that time with his own refined taste, resulting in three tracks that could easily pass as unreleased material unearthed from old dusty DATs from that era.

The grind was relentless, the world moving at a pace so fast that the spin could hardly hope but keep up. As the clouds passed by slowly overhead, seemingly operating on their timeline, the people down below continued to rush and hurry bound by a constant state of hustle.

It was hard to put the pieces together behind the scenes, why had they all become this way? Bound by the constraints and ideologies which left society in a state of flux.

There was always something to be doing, something to be working towards and something else to be gained from the wicked world of work.

Reformed Society is set to appear on Basic Moves – a record which according to the record label has been a long time coming. As the label puts it ‘some things take time’.

The record is a reminiscent throwback to the best era of Tech House. Brilliant in the best sense…

Reformed Society joins the roster of Brussel’s, Belgium’s Basic Moves this June with a 2x12’’ EP, comprising six original compositions from the New Delhi born now Barcelona based artist.

After developing a friendship and sharing music in recent years, Basic Moves boss Walrus welcomes Indian artist Harsh Puri onto the imprint for a special double pack vinyl release. The material was gradually reduced down to the six compositions that make up BM19 after received over a hundred demo tracks from Harsh the past few years. Much of the release is inspired by UK tech house of the late nineties and the turn of the millennium and embraces a heads down, dance floor focused aesthetic throughout.

Opening the release is ‘Constant State Of Hustle’, perfectly setting the tone with an amalgamation of bubbling synthesizer tones, a choppy bass groove, sporadic pads and a heavily swung drum groove. ‘Touch’ then shifts focus over to fluttering stab sequences, bright chords, airy strings and a crunchy rhythm section before ‘Hammer The Keys’ embraces the core essence of the early Tech House sound, fusing organic percussion with multilayered machine funk melodies, all infused with an underlying acid feel.

Next up is ‘Hug Pit’ which dives into deep realms via ethereal, cinematic pad textures, wandering resonant synth lines and shuffled drums. The aptly named ‘Adrenaline Rush’ follows next, picking up the pace again courtesy of a gnarly bass melody, squelchy synth tones and a robust drum machine workout. ‘Dream Shuttle’ then rounds out the release, employing hazy atmospheric textures and a bumpy bass groove alongside dynamic, crisp drums.

For the 77th instalment in the series we turn to Harsh Puri aka Reformed Society for a deep and dubbed out session.

DJing for 25 years, Harsh describes himself as “obsessed with discovering music of all kinds, old and new.”  He is also driven to learn the production techniques of different genres and incorporate them into his own creative process under his Reformed Society alias.

Recent releases include a collaboration with Steve O’Sullivan on Mosaic and an album on Basic Moves . He has several releases in the pipeline including a second collaboration with Steve O’Sullivan on Kontakt Records coming later this year.

Having recently relocated to Barcelona from London he is currently a resident DJ at Switch 

More about the mix: It is a mix of old and new(ish) dubby records and even includes a bit of wisdom from a 2014 Jah Shaka interview in the beginning and end of the mix.

DJing for over 25 years and having lived in 5 different countries including an 8 year stint in London, Harsh Puri (Reformed Society) is currently residing in Barcelona.

While in London, he ran the parties Play at the Waiting Room and Downplay at Brilliant Corners. He was also a resident at Jaded, Corsica Studios for a short period of time. 

He continues to run Play in Barcelona. Previous guests include Alex Picone,  Scott Fraser, Andy Blake, Alex Celler, Walrus, Nick and many more. 

Constant devotion to time in the studio has given him the opportunity to release music for 10 years now, with most recent releases on O.C.D. (Open Channel for Dreamers), Basic Moves, Mosaic and Dolly. Lots more to come this year and the next.
