Mam hums low in the London light,
The train sighs past in the early night.
Your fists are curled like knots in thread,
She holds you close, and strokes your head.

Yr hen gân, dw i’n cofio dim...
“But my nain used to sing it, love,” she grins.
Just a line, soft and thin,
But your breath slows — it settles in.

I sit on the floor by the heater’s hum,
Still in my coat, thumb pressed dumb.
I don’t know what I’m meant to say,
So I count the sounds that drift away.

A tap, a car, the milkman's steps,
A rustle as you shift and rest.
Mam sings low — not quite in key,
But somehow it’s everything to me.

My mother sang in fractured lines,
In the valleys, in winter, to sleep-pressed minds.
The ceiling cracked, the walls were bare,
But the song hung warm inside the air.

I hum a note — it blends, it bends,
Her voice and mine, like two old friends.
We stitch a tune from breath and ache,
For all the songs we didn’t take.

The flat is small, the sky leans grey,
But there's a fire in your breath today.
The lamp throws stars upon the wall,
Your eyes blink slow, your body small.

But it keeps in time with your quiet spine.
The words are gone. The feeling stays.
We pass it down, in hush and praise.
