Having released the acclaimed Be Mine on Crosstown Rebels in 2017, Berlin-based Siopis lands on Rebellion with Unconditional, a poignant two-tracker that features the vocals of esteemed DnB lyricist, MC Coppa.

“An interview with Lauryn Hill inspired me to make this release. It blew me away and I felt it straight in my heart, so I wanted to share the deep message that comes from it. I put her vocals into the break of the lead track, and Unconditional was born.” Siopis.

Beginning with the ethereal sounds of Unconditional, the lead track is a journey into electronic music’s spiritual realm, as supple keys vibrate alongside a gently moving bassline. A sample from Lauryn Hill’s iconic speech acts as the breakdown, before the emotive bassline comes back in to pull deeply on our heartstrings. Kaleidoscope feat. MC Coppa completes the release. Bubbling with subtle hats and dreamy pads, the moving cut takes on a tougher edge with MC Coppa’s stirring monologue, whilst Siopis’ flagship club-ready sound features right the way through to form a track that sounds perfect at home, and on the dancefloor.

A prolific producer, Siopis has been carving out a career in electronic music for more than a decade. Previously known under his Silversurfer moniker, he is responsible for some of Crosstown Rebels’ earliest releases, producing 2004’s Parisis and collaborating with Kiki on the seminal Shake Off that same year. Fast-forward to more recent times where continued releases on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels and M.A.N.D.Y’s Get Physical Music have helped define his emotional, dance-oriented sound, whilst frequent performances at clubbing institutions such as Hoppetosse and Golden Gate have established him as a regular on the Berlin circuit. With international sets under his belt at the likes of Miami’s Ocean’s Ten and Mexico’s Americana Club Social, the future continues to shine bright for Siopis.

3 QUESTIONS to MARC HOULE:

Q: First of all thanks for your mix and the video you made of it. Let's talk about your roots: How did you get in touch with electronic music once?

A: Way back when, Electronic music really only existed in the realms of computers and science fiction. It represented a romantic dream of the unexplored future which was suddenly being made available to people en masse. Something clicked in my head and I wanted to explore these feelings and the electronic sounds became the soundtrack.  I’ve been chasing that dragon ever since. 

Q: How did you spend your days since the lockdown in early 2020?

A: So many phases have happened. I went from optimism to depression back to hope and scattering around trying to reinvent myself and trying to figure out how exactly I can make best use of this downtime.  It’s steered me back to the sounds and feelings I originally felt and allowed me time to focus once again.  I am rediscovering old synths, songs and cassettes and reworking them in a modern way.  It’s fun.

Q: Which future projects are on the way and what are you currently working on?

A: Right now I’m putting together a live set for Paxahau, the fine people who do the Detroit Movement Festival each year.  My itemsandthings.com Bandcamp page is updated and a new release should be up there soon. I’ve been exploring the Roland TR-8s a little more in-depthly and getting ready to dive into the new Ableton 12.  I’m also doing a bit of sound design for corporations as a means to keep that part of my brain busy.  Last night I had a dream I had 2 shows booked in France this weekend.  It’s strange for the last 15 years of my life to exist only in a dream state.

Originally from the Ivory Coast, Raoul first set foot on German soil in 1992. Once a professional football player, after a severe injury he had to give up his sports career and has dedicated his life to music.

Raoul's vision to unite traditional African instruments with modern electronic sounds has laid a foundation to a new genre that is now considered to be a cornerstone of electronic music: Afro House!

Release-wise he has graced labels like Moodmusic, Strictly Rhythm, Ministry of Sound and of course Compost Black Label.

For many years Re:Fresh Your Mind (R|Y|M) has been a pillar of subcultural development in the Rhine-Main area and on a national level mainly focusing on event organization. Though the events have expended lately not only in Frankfurt but also on a national level due to its musical diversity and generally speaking because of its openness towards changes in the scene.  Understandably Re:Fresh Your Mind is conceived as a platform for a subcultural exchange between artists and music lovers initiated by SKAI and his Re:Fresh family, which include a few well respected DJs. With the label-launch of R|Y|M Records earlier this year Re:Fresh Your Mind-basis enhanced its reputation in the scene and takes another step in its development. Therefore, Frankfurt based SKAI teamed up with Gorge, who is well respected for his solo-productions and of course his works with Nick Curly. You never know what to expect next, but be sure it won't be anything you can be certain about when talking about R|Y|M - Re:Fresh Your Mind.
